Civil servant, 55, remanded over alleged rape

Makurdi, April 12, 2019 (NAN) A 55-year-old civil servant in Benue, Samuel Iornav, was on Friday remanded in prison custody by a Makurdi Magistrate’s court over alleged rape of an eight years old girl.

The Magistrate, Mrs. J.O Ayia, ordered that the accused person be remanded in Federal Prison, Makurdi after the case was heard.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Ato Godwin, had told the court that the case was reported at the ‘D’ Division Police Station on April 8, 2019 by one Emmanuel Ejeh, who resides behind NUJ office, Makurdi.

The Prosecution specifically alleged that the accused person forcefully had carnal knowledge of the minor, and had voluntarily 

confessed to committing the crime.

When the case came up for mention, plea of the accused person was not taken for want of jurisdiction.

The Prosecution said that investigation into the matter was still in progress, and asked the court for another date for mention.

He said that the offence contravened section 284 of the penal code law of Benue State 2004.

Counsel to the accused, Tor Adza, later told the court that he would apply for bail for the accused person.

The case has been adjourned to May 6, 2019 for further mention (NAN)
