Commonwealth Day: Association calls for inclusive empowerment programmes for women, youths

Abuja, March 9, 2020 (NAN) Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association (COSFAN) on Monday called for more programmes to empower women and youths in the country.

Dr Ruth Adimula, President of the association gave the call in a statement to commemorate the 2020 Commonwealth Day, on Monday in Abuja.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.”

The day is annually celebrated on the second Monday in March.

She said that it was important to develop programmes that are people oriented as it would create job opportunities and economic development in the country.

“We want to encourage inclusive economic empowerment and fair trade so that all people, particularly women, young people and those in marginalised communities can share the fruits of progress and prosperity.

“We need to also achieve gender equality and women empowerment, reduce poverty among member countries.

“Activate food security to end hunger and ensure inclusive and equitable education among others.

“Together, we can deliver a common future by connecting, innovating and transforming our societies,” she said.

NAN reports that COSFAN is a body of eminent Nigerians who have enjoyed sponsorship of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (through the British Council in Nigeria) in their respective postgraduate academic pursuits. (NAN)
