Court jails barber 12 months for stealing bag, cell phone

Abuja, March 11, 2020 (NAN) A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a barber, David Kehinde, to 12 months in prison for stealing a phone worth 79,000 and a bag containing valuables worth N468,000.

Twenty-two-year-old Kehinde, who resides at Angwan Tiv Mabushi Village, Abuja, had pleaded guilty on arraignment on a count charge of theft.

He pleaded for  for leniency.

The Judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq convicted and sentenced Kehinde following his guilty plea and the facts of the case.

He did not give him an option of fine but warned him to desist from  crime.

Sadiq said that the punishment would have been more severe if the defendant had not saved the court’s time.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that one Mr Gideon Chizoba and one Mrs Lois Ibiene of  FHA Quarters, Lugbe, and Peace Village, respectively, reported the case at the River Park Police Station on Feb. 29.

Ukagha told the court that at  4:30 a.m on the same date, the convict  stole Chizoba’s Samsung A30 phone worth N79, 000.

Ukagha added that  on the same date, the convict  made away with Ibiene’s bag containing her iPhone ll 128, Glo Wi-Fi, power bank, and N1, 000.

Ukagha said that during police investigation, the convict admitted committing the theft.

She, however, said that  the stolen items had yet to be recovered.

The prosecutor noted that theft  contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
