Court sentences man 1 year in prison  for drug trafficking

Lagos, March 13, 2020 (NAN) A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a 37-year-old unemployed man, Emmanuel Gbolarinwa, to  one year imprisonment for selling 150g of cannabis, also known as hemp

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo convicted and sentenced Gbolarinwa following his guilty  plea to a count charge of drug trafficking preferred by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The judge also convicted him based on the facts of the case, which were reviewed by the court.

The prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan tendered in evidence Gbolarinwa’s written statement, a drug analysis form, a request for scientific aid form and remnants of the cannabis.

The judge admitted and marked them as exhibits,  and consequently convicted and sentenced Gbolarinwa.

While admitting guilt, the convict begged the court to show mercy on him, and promised to turn a new leaf.

In the judgment, the judge held that the sentence should begin from date of his arrest.

According to the NDLEA,  the convict  committed the offence on Nov. 26, 2019.

The agency said that  he was arrested under a bridge at Oshodi, Lagos, while trading on hemp listed in the NDLEA schedule as a banned substance.

Drug trafficking  contravenes Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004. (NAN)
