Abuja, April 16, 2020 (NAN) Prof. Saad Ahmed, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Federal Medical Centre, (FMC), Abuja, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for extending the stay-at-home order, in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT in a bid to effectively contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ahmed, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, said that the extension would help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus to the barest minimum.
“I think the two weeks extension is in order and if you notice the way it started, the first two cases we got were those who came from outside Nigeria.
“We have started having some community spread of the virus, which we have been trying to prevent from the beginning.
“If we allow the virus to spread much more, it will be quite devastating to this country and the entire globe as a whole.
“The fact that the virus has not reached some remote areas at the moment doesn’t mean that it won’t get there.
“People should obey the stay – at – home order to help quell this transmission, stop community spread and minimise it to a level that we can manage,” he said.
However, he, called on the government to hasten the disbursement of palliatives for Nigerians, to help cushion the effect of stay at home order, especially at the rural areas.
Ahmed also called on the government to relapse the movement restriction since it could assist some agencies to provide residents with adequate services to help the people cope with the stress of the lockdown.
NAN reports that President Buhari had on Monday, extended the lockdown by another two weeks in Lagos, Ogun and FCT, to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country. (NAN)
