COVID-19: Kano traffic agency tasks commercial drivers on passenger limits

Kano, April. 14, 2020 (NAN) The Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) has urged commercial drivers to comply with the passenger limits approved by state government to contain spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nabilusi Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the Agency, made the call in a statement on Tuesday in Kano.
Abubakar said that the state government had fixed new passenger limits for commercial drivers after a recent meeting with KAROTA, the state transport ministry and other relevant stakeholders.
He said the new order was a review of the earlier position adopted by the Agency in the face of the Coronavirus outbreak in the state.
The Agency’s spokesman said that commercial tricycle operators would henceforth convey only two passenger while taxi drivers would convey two passengers at the rear and one passenger at the front seat.
“Commercial buses are to convey only two passengers in a seat and one at the front, this order applies also to commercial vehicles conveying passengers from the city to rural areas.
“Vans, trucks and tippers conveying goods and services are to carry only one person beside the driver while conveying such goods,” he said.
Abubakar noted that passengers on board such vehicles and the drivers must wear face masks, and hand sanitizers made available to the passengers.
He added that the Agency would adopt effective monitoring measures to ensure compliance with the order.
“Leaders of the affected unions have agreed to work with the agency and security operatives, violation of the order will not be tolerated.
“The state government is determined to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus in the state, it will not spare anyone who tries to jeopardize the health of the public,” he said. (NAN)
