COVID-19: Vicar’s wife urges women to be law-abiding, keep home

Lagos, March 22, 2020 (NAN) The Anglican Church women and mothers have been urged to be law-abiding, ensure adherence to the state laws and care for the well-being of their families and the Church.

Mrs Eniola Ajayi, wife of the Vicar of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ikate, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday, on the occasion of the Mothering Sunday.

Ajayi, who is popularly called ‘Mama Yard’ as a Vicar’s wife, however congratulated mothers on this year’s commemoration.

She urged women to live up to their motherly responsibility at home, body of Christ and the nation at large.

NAN reports that Mothering Sunday, also known as Mother’s Day is a religious event held every fourth Sunday in Lent.

“As we mark the Mothering Sunday during this global crisis, mothers should ensure strict adherence to the health and safety tips against COVID-19, which is on the increase around the world and Lagos State.

“I know that most of our women are professional women and in the midst of their tight schedule, they should make out time to care and monitor the home front, especially the girl child.

“Washing of the hands and using hand sanitisers should be frequently encouraged and teaching the children how to behave outside the home to stay safe because coronavirus pandemic is real,” Ajayi said.

She appreciated the women of the Parish for all preparations for the day which had been cancelled, saying that “obedience is better and safer than sacrifice”.

“What so ever the case might be, the cancellation is based on health issues. We should be obedient to the authorities.

“Mothers should use this time to lift up our husbands and children in prayer and to pray for the nation.

“It is also a time to set ourselves apart to face the realities of the country and pray for intervention and be hopeful that we will have many more Mothering Sundays to celebrate,” Ajayi said.

The Vicar’s wife applauded the Lagos State Government on its proactive measures and called for more precise updates on the COVID-19 cases instead of relying on international data.

“With an hourly update from our government on the cases on ground, it will help to stop fake news flying around. It will help the masses to know and believe that the virus is real and stay safe,” she said.

NAN reports that in Surulere, Lagos, movement of persons was light, compared to the normal Sunday movement as most Anglican, Catholics and some other denominations adhered to directives by their churches and state government. (NAN)
