Delta Judiciary to collaborate with Legal Aid Council on access to justice

Asaba, July 5, 2018 (NAN) The Delta Judiciary on Thursday said that it would partner with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria to enable its indigenes to have fast and easy access to justice in the state.

Mr Timothy Agbaragu, the Public Relations Officer to the Delta Chief judge, Justice Marshal Umukoro, quoted Umukoro as  assuring the new state coordinator of the council, Mrs Flora Imo of its partnership.

Umukoro noted that prison congestion was as a result of under funding, stressing that the consequential effect was the inability of the prison authorities to reproduce inmates when necessary.

He said that this had adversely affected the speedy dispensation of justice in the State, and since the prison agency was not under the state government to legislate, it was unconstitutional for the state government to prepare budget to purchase vehicles for the prison.

He said that the council should write a formal letter to the effect of the waiver of the filing fees.

He noted that if there was any case of extortion from court staff,  the matter would be investigated and any one found culpable would be brought to book.

He said that filing fees of court processes and prolonged detention of suspects awaiting trial without prosecution would be addressed. (NAN)
