Director cautions against quackery in Nursing

Lagos, March 20, 2020 (NAN) Mrs Dorcas Shonibare, the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health, on Friday called for collective efforts to curb quackery in the nursing profession in the country.

Shonibare made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

She said that such efforts were needed to revamp the profession.

“ The issue of quackery in nursing is a serious one because we are losing many lives to the quacks, who pretend to be nurses.

“Some informal systems are encouraging quacks in the nursing profession.

“There is need for everybody to be involved because we all know who these quacks are in our various communities.

“If we continue to cover them, we are not doing the society any good; so, all hands need to be on deck in the fight against quackery in our noble profession,” she said.

Shonibare advised managements of hospitals and health centres to desist from training quack nurses in Lagos State and the country at large, describing the practice as evil.

According to her, the Lagos State Government will continue to punish any management of hospital or hospitals involved in the menace.

“The Lagos State Government is not joking with this because lives are being lost on daily basis.

“The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring Agency is working round the clock, to ensure that these quacks and those training them face the law.

“Lagos State is doing its best to get rid of quackery in the profession.

“So, those who are still involved in training these quacks should desist or face the law,” she said. (NAN)
