Don’t infringe on people’s rights, Nasarawa CP tasks officers

Akwanga (Nasarawa State), June 18, 2019 (NAN) The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Mr Bola Longe, has urged the officers in the command to respect the fundamental human rights of citizens in the interest of peace and development.
Longe made the call on Tuesday during a familiarisation tour of Akwanga Police Division in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
He said the tour was to interact with the police and other critical stakeholders in order to ensure peace in Akwanga and its environs.
He said the Nigerian constitution had given every citizen rights, hence, the need for police to respect it.
According to him, You (Police) are here because of the people and without the people, you will not be policing.
“We are all equal, so we have to respect the rights of people in the interest of peace and development,” he said.
Longe also tasked the officers to continue to be professional, disciplined and hard working, adding that hard work paid.
“I am doing my best in tackling criminal activities, such as kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes across the state.
“I believe with your commitment, we shall collectively flush out criminal elements in the state,” he said.
The commissioner also urged stakeholders to contribute positively in terms of support and information to the police, to enable them tackle crime in the area and the state.
He said such support would go a long way in combating crime in the state, adding that the issue of security was the responsibility of all and sundry.
The Commissioner of Police urged farmers/herdsmen and other residents of the area to co-exist peacefully and be their brother’s keepers in the interest of development.
Earlier, Mr Edmund Knight, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Akwanga Area Command, commended the CP for the visit and for being up and doing in curtailing criminal activities in the state.
The DPO restated his division’s commitment to be hard working in tackling crime in Akwanga and its environs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sen. Philip Gyunka, Alhaji Husseini Akwanga, a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, officials of the Local Government Council, NURTW and Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) members, were among those who attended the meeting.
Other stakeholders were representatives of farmers, herdsmen, traders and other security agencies among other invited guests. (NAN)
