Education Ministry to partner NYCN to curb social vices in Delta

Asaba, Aug. 1, 2019 (NAN) The Delta Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Patrick Ukah, has said that the ministry will partner the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) to curb social vices in schools in the state.

Ukah stated this while receiving the state executive of the NYCN who paid him a courtesy call in Asaba on Thursday.

The commissioner said that social vices such as cultism and drug abuse, among others, had become a source of concern to the state government.

He said that as a result of the vices, the state government was bringing back extra-curricular activities such as Boys Scout, Boys Brigade, Man O’ War and Girls Guide movements, among others, with a view to engaging the students positively.

Uka  said that the absence of extra-curricular activities in schools was part of what had resulted in the vices being on the increase in the schools.

Ukah  also said that part of the measures that had been put in place to stem social vices were the introduction of compulsory inter-house sports competitions for all primary and secondary school.
The commissioner enumerated the competitions to include Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup, Headmasters’ Cup and Schools Sports Festival.

The commissioner further said that plans were on to bring in role models to schools to mentor students and inspire them to live a productive life that would make them useful to society.(NAN)
