Mechanic docked for allegedly defrauding customer

Lagos, March 16, 2020 (NAN) A 32-year-old mechanic, Ebuka Obi, on Monday appeared before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly defrauding his customer of N300,000.

Obi, who resides in Orile area of Lagos, is being tried on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 24 at No. 32, Abata St., Orile Iganmu, Surulere, Lagos.

Osayande alleged that the defendant, collected N300,000 from the customer and complainant, one Esther Ezenwai, on the pretext to buy a new Toyota Sienna car engine, but converted the money to his personal use.

She said that the defendant, who fraudulently obtained the money from Ezenwai, abandoned the Toyota Sienna car and absconded.

Osayande said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes 15 years’ imprisonment for fraud, while Section 287 provides for three years’ jail term for stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adelaja adjourned the case until April 1, for substantive trial. (NAN)
