Empowerment: Ilorin Youth Group disburses cash to 90 widows, indigent women

Ilorin, June 2, 2019 (NAN) The Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA) on Sunday disbursed the sum of N1.5m to 90 widows and indigent women as its 2019 Annual Ramadan Empowerment programme.

The beneficiaries, the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, received  sums ranging from  N10, 000 to N30, 000 to support their petty trades.

Delivering sermon at the programme, Mallam Abdulsalam Olayinwola, the Chief Imam of Radio Kwara Mosque,  commended the association for alleviating the suffering of the women.

He urged well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to emulate the gesture of the union, saying that what some people needed  to make a difference was a meager amount of money.

The cleric admonished people to always follow the path of Islam, which he said was the only remedy to the prevailing societal challenges.

Earlier in his address, the President of the association, Alhaji Salaudeen Babatunde, said that the fund was provided by a philanthropist, an indigene of Ilorin toward human capital development.

He said that the programme had become an annual event over the years.

Also speaking, Alhaji Uthman Jagunma, the National Publicity Secretary of the association   sought the  collaboration of well-to-do individuals to also  assist the downtrodden in the society.

He said the association had wanted to capture more beneficiaries, but had to reduce it  to 90 to make meaning to their businesses.

NAN reports that the beneficiaries were drawn from the five local government areas that made up the emirate.

Mrs Taiye Abubakar, one of the beneficiaries,  applauded the association for finding it worthy to empower the widows.

He assured the association that the beneficiaries would make judicious use of the money. (NAN)
