Former middleweight boxer advises upcoming boxers on discipline, hard work

Benin, Aug. 2, 2019 (NAN) A former middleweight champion, Albert Eromosele, on Friday advised upcoming boxers to be of good discipline and put in some level of hard work as the only ways to achieve greatness.

Eromosele told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin that it would be difficult to achieve greatness in any profession if athletes were not of good discipline and hard working.

“Athletes should not make the job of coaches difficult and complicated. They should be of good discipline, so that the process of learning the techniques from their coaches would not be difficult,’’ he said.

The former champion added that the only way for young boxers to get better in their chosen profession was through being hard working and disciplined.

“They should do some physical exercises on their own, run on their own, go to the gym on their own. The coach can’t be with them for five to six hours, they (the coaches) still have some other things to attend to.’’

Eromosele cited the example of his childhood to explain more on his contention.

“I started boxing at the age of 11 in the Sabongida area of Edo, which was really tough for me at that young age, but I put in some level of hard work.

“I was running every morning from Sabongida to Afuze and on weekends I was extending the race to Auchi before returning to Sabongida, as a way of training myself and keeping fit.

“As a kid at 11, running in the morning to me was hard work. I really wanted to pursue my goal as a boxer, so I had to do it,’’ he said.

The two-time Nigerian Olympian pointed out that trying to cut corners would not lead to greatness, adding that it would only work for a short period of time.

“After working for a short time, all that has been achieved would be lost.’’

He urged young athletes to show some high level of discipline and hard work to enable sponsors invest in them.(NAN)
