Gbajabiamila’s mum urges residents to be involved in community activities

Lagos, March 29, 2018 (NAN) Alhaja Latifat Gbajabiamila, Chairman Ajowa Community Development Association (CDA), says there is need for residents to be more committed in the activities of their neighbourhood associations, as it helped to boost development.
Gbajabiamila, who is the mother of Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Leader of the House of Representatives, Lagos-APC, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
The octogenarian said that participation of residents in the programmes of their various community wards would help in attracting social amenities to communities and reduce nefarious activities within neighbourhoods.
“I advise members of communities, streets and estates to belong and participate in these associations.
“It is an avenue that goes a long way to attract more attention of the local and state governments to such areas through their programmes.
“The AJOWA CDA, which I belong to, is a very active association; it brings us out to the government as we represent our community; through our activities the government gets to know our needs and provides us with same.
“AJOWA community comprises of 15 resident associations and 18 streets which border Alhaji Masha and its environs in Surulere,” she said.
Gbajabiamila said that the CDA was organising the first of its kind medical outreach in the neighbourhood.
“Our Ajowa CDA is now planning its first project, which is a free medical mission, for all the residents and surrounding communities to benefit in the services.
“What we are doing is to create awareness and help people who cannot afford medical services, especially services such as cancer screening, BMI, blood sugar, Blood Pressure and eye tests , as well as de-worming for children.
“The event, slated for Saturday, March 31, is expected to reach 400 participants from within and outside our immediate community,” she said.
Gbajabiamila urged mothers to take advantage of the free medical mission and bring their children for vaccination, to prevent childhood killer diseases.
She also called on all chairmen and house owners to ensure that residents and tenants attend community meetings and activities to engender closeness, foster peace and harmony, improve sense of purpose and attract government attention.
Also, Mr Kobi Gold, the secretary of the CDA, advised chairmen and secretaries of communities and streets to attend community development association meetings, being automatic members.
Gold said that the AJOWA CDA had plans of starting an empowerment program to positively engage the less privileged in the communities.
NAN reports that the medical mission would also involve counselling, referrals, malaria and typhoid testing and treatment, tooth extraction and prostate cancer screening. (NAN)
