German-Kurdish man arrested in Italy on Turkey’s request

Arrest
Hanover (Germany), Sept. 24, 2019 (dpa/NAN) An employee for the central German city of Hanover was on Tuesday arrested for unknown reasons in Italy at the behest of Turkey, the city administration confirmed.

The arrested man appeared to be under investigation in Turkey, though the city said it did not know what for.

He was arrested in Italy during his holiday.

The employee is a Kurdish man from Turkey who applied for asylum in Germany in 1996, which was later granted to him.

German newspaper Die Welt reported that he was a psychologist who now has both German and Turkish citizenship.

The spokesman for the Hanover city administration, Dennis Dix, said, “he is a reliable, well-respected and competent employee, there have never been any complaints about him.“

Dix, however, said the city would contact the consulate general in Milan to determine what measures it could take to support the man. (dpa/NAN)
