Give back to your alma mater, Unilorin Alumni charges varsity graduates

Lagos, Nov. 24, 2019 (NAN) Mr Debo Atunwa, Chairman, University of Ilorin Alumni Association, Lagos Chapter, has urged university graduates to give back to their alma mater for the development of the institutions and society.
The Unilorin Alumnus gave the charge while addressing newsmen on Sunday in Lagos on the association’s Reunion and Fund Raiser holding next Saturday.
Atunwa urged alumni to unite to empower students, especially those from their institutions, for societal growth.
“We need to get institutions into partnership with alumni to encourage them to do more and as they do so, the society becomes beneficiaries in projects like scholarship, research and financing.
“I urge all alumni of the university of Ilorin to attend the occasion and be part of the group that will make impact in our institution, people and society,’’ he said.
Atunwa said that the alumni had opted to play more prominent role in the development of the institution in line with global trends.
“Considering the socio economic situation in the country, and as part of our efforts to prepare undergraduates for the outside world, the Lagos Chapter of the association initiated an annual lecture for graduating students.
“The objectives are to acquaint students with the reality of life with a view to building a mindset of entrepreneurs that will enable them face challenges and surmount them.
“This will also imbue them with the mindset that will think of “ what can I give my society and not what can I take from my society.’’
According to him, some of the things students need to know include computer skills, comportment, writing of curriculum vitae, application letters and grants as well as exposure generally.
He said this would instill the habit of competition and seriousness in undergraduates.
On the annual dinner, he said the association seeks to raise about N10 million toward some projects.
“We plan to continue our bursary awards initiated in year 2010 for best students in each department across all faculties.
“We covered approximately 20 students each year between 2010 and 2014. It was a welcome development and it was impactful,’’ he said.
Atunwa said that lot of alumni in the world had been identified as driving force to reckon with and had been greater contributors to the development of their institutions. (NAN)
