Group pledges support to Kano Govt on girl-child education

Kano, March 13, 2020 (NAN) The Kano State chapter of High Level Women Advocates (HILWA), an NGO, has pledged to support the State Government to promote girl-child education in the state.

The Chairperson of the association, Prof. Aisha Abdul-Ismail, made the promise when the association led 100 secondary school girls on advocacy visit to the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Zahararu Muhammad-Umar, on Friday.

The advocacy visit was part of the four-day activities organised by HILWA in collaboration with UNICEF and SUBEB to commemorate the International Women’s Day, which was celebrated on March 8.

The girls were selected to attend a mentoring workshop where women professionals from various fields, including Engineers, Doctors and Lawyers, spoke on their various fields of studies at the event.

Magistrate Maryam Sabo represented the HILWA chairperson.

Abdul-Ismail said the association would continue to partner relevant Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as donor agencies to promote the girl-child education in the state.

“The decision to organise the event is borne out of commitment to inspire people to act in the ongoing fight for gender equality and raise awareness about the fight for gender parity and inspire support for organisations that help women globally.

“Together, we want to mobilise to end gender-based violence; we are calling for economic justice and rights for all, autonomy, sexual and reproductive health and rights.”

She urged parents to support the renewed efforts towards the promotion of girl-child education for the development of the state and Nigeria at large.

In her remarks, Muhammad-Umar said that the state government was determined to initiate more empowerment programmes for women to improve their socio-economic status.

The commissioner said the ministry would give the association the necessary support and cooperation to achieve the desired objectives.

She warned the students against all forms of social vices to enable them become useful members in the society that could contribute their quota towards the development of their state and country.

The students, who also paid similar advocacy visit to the state Ministry of Education, were accompanied by the UNICEF Chief Field Office, Kano, Mr Maulid Warfa, and other officials of SUBEB. (NAN)
