Guilt-racked scrap dealer remanded in prison

Lagos, April 19, 2017 (NAN) A scrap dealer, Shehu Abubakar, who pleaded guilty to stealing caterpillar parts valued at N100,000, was on Wednesday in Lagos remanded at Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbule, who gave the ruling, said the 28-year-old should be kept behind bars pending sentence.

Abubakar, a resident of Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, was arraigned for stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on April 6 at Abule- Egba on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The accused stole some parts from a caterpillar valued at N100,000, property of Oando filling station after he unlawfully entered the premises at about 11.30 p.m. where the caterpillar was parked.

“The accused who scaled the fence to gain entry used some sophisticated tools to remove
the parts.

“The security guard sighted him and raised alarm; the accused wanted to escape through the fence when he was apprehended and the parts were recovered from him.”

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed three years on conviction, according to the provisions of the section.

The case was adjourned until April 25 for sentence. (NAN)
