Institute empowers 120 women

Abuja, March 18, 2020 (NAN) The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) empowered 120 women in the FCT with the sum of N10, 000 each to commence petty businesses to cushion the effect of economic hardship.

Mr Adebayo Opeyemi, the Senior Programme Office, IHVN, FCT region, delivered the money at a programme tagged “Household Economic Strengthening Activity” on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the stipend was to relieve the beneficiaries of the burden of having to take care of their children and wards without necessary support.

Opeyemi said that the concern of the institute was prompted by the fact that their children must be healthy, safe, stable and ensure they were in school.

According to him, the institute provides support to all HIV programmes especially by working with orphans in Nigeria, as there are 17.5 million children who are vulnerable to HIV and this exposes them to other areas of risk.

He said that the priority of the institute was to work with caregivers who would ensure that  children were properly taken care of.

Mrs Talatu Sharwa, the Executive Director, Jumorota, an NGO, commended the institute for bringing succour to the women, while calling on the women to be faithful and focus on their businesses.

She tasked the beneficiaries to ensure that the money was used for the purpose it was meant for.

Mrs Nana Suleiman, the Matron of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, called on the women not to be afraid of starting in a little way, while urging them to start contributions to help their businesses.

Miss Anna Angbazo, the Programme Officer, IHVN, lauded Jumorota for its unwavering support to vulnerable persons through financial empowerment.

She urged the women to always visit the hospital whenever their children were exhibiting signs of sickness. (NAN)
