Insurance agent in court  over alleged theft of clients’ premium worth N1.2m

Lagos, Nov. 22, 2019 (NAN) An Insurance agent, Cyril Bassey, 32, on Friday appeared in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing clients’ N1.2 million insurance premium paid through him.

The defendant, whose house address was not given, was arraigned on a charge of theft.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Oluwafemi Adeleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 28, at AIICO Plc Headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said that some customers paid their insurance premium which totalled N1.2million,  through the defendant as agent, to the insurance company.

Adeleye also said that the defendant did not remit the money but converted the sums to his personal use.

He said that the offence contravened Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates seven years imprisonment for anybody convicted of stealing.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge while the Magistrate, Mrs F. M Dalley, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Dec. 12 for hearing. (NAN)
