IPAC in Yobe urges state governments to conduct council elections

Damaturu, Feb.16, 2017 (NAN) The  Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Yobe has called on state governments to conduct local government council elections for enhancement of democracy in Nigeria.

Alhaji Umar Kukuri, the IPAC Chairman in Yobe, made the call while addressing newsmen in Damaturu on Thursday.

He said: “democracy can only be closer to the grassroots when duly elected chairmen and councilors occupy leadership of the local councils”.

Kukuri lauded Yobe State Government for conducting local government elections in 2011, 2013 and 2017.

“This has made Yobe a role model in the conduct of local government elections in Nigeria and bringing democracy much closer to the grassroots,“he said.

He commended the electorate, the INEC and security agencies in the state for the recent peaceful election across the state.

“It is heart warming that the last Saturday council elections in the state was very peaceful without a single incidence of violence or breach of security,“he said.

The chairman said all political parties participated in the election, affording them opportunity to contribute to the conduct of free, fair and acceptable elections.

“As a democratic body, IPAC wish to encourage harmonious working relationship between the state and the local government councils for the benefit of the rural populace” he said. (NAN)
