IWD: NGO trains 30 women as community gender champions in Kaduna

Kaduna, March 9, 2020 (NAN) The EL-VOW Foundation says it will train 30 women in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State to become gender champions for community women.

The Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Theresa Biniyat, said in a statement in Kaduna on Monday that the training would be conducted in partnership with De Raheem Foundation.

Biniyat said that the training was part of activities to commemorate the 2020 International Women Day (IWD), with the theme, “I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Right”, to accelerate gender equality.

The News Agency Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day was set aside as a focal point of movement for women rights and to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

She said that the training was in response to the need to empower women through enlightenment campaign on tackling sexual and gender violence and other forms of abuse meted to women.

She said that the first phase of the training would begin today (March 9) with focus on equality, leadership, education, self-development and security consciousness.

The executive  director said that the goal was to equip the beneficiaries with socio-economic skills and how to access justice, legal services and sexual assault support groups when faced with cases of sexual and gender-based abuse.

She said that the women would be retrained after three months to equip them with the needed skills to mobilise women in their communities to fight for their rights and resist any form of gender violence.

According to her, females who are fully aware of their human, political and legal rights can strive to become equal in their community.

“This is in line with the Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which targets gender equality by 2030 in developing countries.

“This, the foundation is working to achieve through programmatic activities, in partnership with other organisations in Kaduna State.

“It is, therefore, with pride we in El-Vow Foundation join the rest of the world and the Kaduna State Government to celebrate with women who are making impact in the world,” the statement read in part. (NAN)
