Kiyawa (Jigawa), June 1, 2017 (NAN) Farmers in Kiyawa and Dutse Local Government Areas of Jigawa have commenced planting for this year’s farming season following  heavy rainfall in the area on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many farmers in Kiyawa and Dutse headed to their farms on Thursday, planting crops such as millet, sorghum, beans and groundnut.

NAN reports that the down pour in Kiyawa and Dutse councils lasted over six hours.

Malam Yakubu Dangirbobo, a farmer in Kiyawa-Kudu village, told NAN that he started planting after clearing and applying organic manure on the farm.

Malam Abdullahi Hussaini, another farmer in the village, said they were encouraged to start planting because of the heavy downpour in the area on Wednesday.

He said he was optimistic of a bumper harvest this season following the early arrival of the rains.

The farmers called on the state government to ensure early provision of fertiliser and other inputs. (NAN)
