Kaduna College of Education organises maiden arts exhibition 40 years after

Kafanchan (Kaduna State) Nov. 27, 2019 (NAN) The Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, on Wednesday organised its maiden arts exhibition after 40 years of establishment.
The Provost of the College, Prof. Alexander Kure, who spoke during the event held at the temporary campus in Kafanchan, said that the institution was not only a place for producing teachers but also a place for learning entrepreneurial skills.
“Our students should also explore avenues to earn good fortunes from the skills acquired,” he said.
Kure said that the exhibition provided an avenue to encourage young talents to study fine and applied arts.
He said that the college had produced good hands.
“I am highly impressed with the products of our students, as these works can compete favourably anywhere,” he said.
He urged local governments to consider awarding students of the department contracts relating to arts.
In an opening address, the Head of the department, Mr Christopher Madugu, said that the event was historic and heartwarming.
Madugu said the department had, over the years, produced artists of high repute.
He solicited support from stakeholders to enable the department to compete favourably.
In a goodwill message, Prof. Gambo Duniya of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said he was overwhelmed with the products of the department.
“We have always ensured that students that graduate from here are given admission in ABU to further their studies,” he said.
He described the exhibition as a landmark, and advised that it should be documented in a catalogue for future references.
Also, Mr Dare Akawu, a former Provost of the college, hailed the department for organising the exhibition.
“Let us set the pace so that others will follow.
“Over the years, we have agreed that the Kaduna State College of Education would be the flagship of teacher-training in the country; all hands must be on deck to actualise this vision,” Akawu noted.
He advised policymakers to consider reintroducing fine arts as a subject in both primary and secondary schools so as to encourage the younger generation to show interest in arts.
