Man, 21, docked over alleged cultism

Ile-Ife (Osun), June 18, 2019 (NAN) A 21-year-old man, Babatunde Darasimi, was on Tuesday brought before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun over alleged cultism.

Darasimi, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of belonging to an unlawful society, conspiracy and perverting the course of justice.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence with some others still at large on May 3 at 2:00p.m in Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendant belonged to unlawful society called “Eiye Confraternity”.

According to him, the defendant obstructed the course of justice by assisting some members of Eiye Confraternity to escape.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 64 (a), (b), 126 and 516 of the Criminal Law of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mr A. A. Kolawole, urged the court to grant his client bail in most liberal term.
Kolawole promised the court that his client would not jump bail, and would produce responsible sureties.

Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji, however, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Olatunji said that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

She added that one of the sureties must be a state civil servant on Grade Level 12, while the second surety should show evidence of five years tax payment to Osun Government.

The case was adjourned until July 8 for mention. (NAN)
