Ikorodu (Lagos State), July 29, 2019 (NAN) A 25-year-old man, Sunday Kayode, on Monday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle, valued at N200,000.

Kayode, is facing a two-count charge of attempted robbery and possession of offensive weapon.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 10 at 8:00 p.m. at Ode Road in Imota Ikorodu.

Egunjobi said that Kayode attempted to snatch a Bajaj motorcycle from one Mr Olaji Akinola at dagger point.

He said that Akinola had asked the defendant to take him somewhere on an agreed price, but halfway to their destination, Kayode tried to steal the motorcycle.

“He brought out a dagger, forced the complainant to stop at an isolated place and threatened to kill him if he does not hand over the motorcycle.

“Akinola handed over the key and raised alarm, he was able to attract the attention of some farmers around who came to his rescue.

“Kayode was caught before he could drive off with the motorcycle,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravene Sections 296 and 298 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 296 stipulates 20 years imprisonment for attempted robbery.

The Magistrate, Mr A.O. Ogbe, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 6 for mention. (NAN)
