Michael Okpara varsity urges fresh students to shun social vices

Umuahia, Jan. 17, 2023 (NAN) The Vice-Chancellor, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Maduebibesi Iwe, has advised fresh students for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions to shun all forms social vices.
Iwe gave the advice on Tuesday, when he formally declared open the 27th/28th orientation course for the students.
He congratulated them on their admission and admonished them to settle down quickly and make most of the opportunity to acquire sound education.
He warned that the university would not condone cultism, homosexuality, lesbianism, drug abuse, rape, stealing and other anti-social practices.
“I wish to make it abundantly clear that anyone of you who allows himself or herself to be lured and initiated into cult groups shall be shown the way out of this university.
“If you were initiated before you came here, you have an opportunity now to renounce it completely,” Iwe said.
According to him, the university has a well-equipped and functional Medical Centre where they can register in order to address their health issues.
He urged them to visit the university’s Voluntary Counselling and Testing Unit at the medical centre to ascertain their health status and get counselled if they were infected.
Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Marc Ogbuagu, said that the orientation was designed to remold the students and position them properly to excel in character and learning in the university.
He urged them to make their parents and guardians happy by taking their studies seriously and making right choices in the university.
“Please, identify with the good and shun the bad and the ugly in character,” Ogbuagu said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some Heads of units and directorates of the university made presentations to guide the students and get them to adapt to their new environment. (NAN)(www.nannew.ng)
