Motorcyclist, 33, in court over alleged possession of fake currency notes

Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 7, 2018 (NAN) A 33-year-old motorcyclist, Azeez Taoreed was on Thursday arraigned by the Police in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged possession of fake N1,000 notes.

The accused and resident of Igbe Community in Ikorodu is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and possession of fake Nigerian currency.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Mary Ajiteru, told the court that the fake currency were found in the possession of the accused at Elepe Area of Ikorodu Community where he used the money to purchase items.

“He used a fake N1,000 note to buy drinks, collected the  change and went back the following day to spend more of the money at the same trader’s shop.

“It was the trader that alerted the neighbours and the fake currencies amounting to N10, 000 was found on him,” she said.

The offence contravened Section 411 and 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence stipulates seven years imprisonment on conviction.

In his ruling, the magistrate, Mr Wahab Balogun, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Balogun said that one of the sureties must be gainfully employed and showed three months pay slips.

He adjourned the case until July 19 for mention. (NAN)
