Lagos, April 25, 2020 (NAN) The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday distributed food items to some Lagos communities to cushion the effect of the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
AVM Lawal Alao, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Logistics Command,Ikeja distributed the items at Shasha, Ewu land and Mafoluku/Shogunle in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 400 bags, each comprising 10kg of rice, 10kg of garri, one litre of vegetable oil and 10 satchet of tomato paste were distributed at Mafoluku/Sogunle, while 300 bags were given at Shasha.
Alao said that the palliatives were part of the reach-out of NAF to commemorate its 56th anniversary.
He said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar directed that all commands should reach out to host communities especially the vulnerable.
He said it was aimed at contributing towards the Federal Government’s efforts to assuage the hardships occasioned by the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the disease.
“The CAS directed that the six commands located in Makurdi, Bauchi, Yenegoa, Kaduna, Enugu and here in Lagos should reach out to the host communities in form of palliatives and food items.
“In so doing, the logistics command has chosen the immediate communities of Mafoluku, Sogunle as well as Shasha.
“For these two communities of Mafoluku and Sogunle, we have 400 bags, which will be handed over to the Oba for appropriate distribution to those categories of vulnerable persons,” he said.
Alao said that he hoped that the palliatives would ameliorate the sufferings of the vulnerable within these communities.
“This is our own little way of contributing in ameliorating the suffering of the most vulnerable members in our immediate community.
“Additionally, it is also a way of us in the NAF, saying that we care about those who live within our immediate vicinity. We know that it is by no means exhaustive,” he said.
Receiving the item on behalf of his community, Oba Shakirudeen Kuti of Ewuland appreciated the NAF.
“I want to appreciate the NAF for giving back to the members of the community,” he said.
Oba Babatunde Akanbi of Shasha also expressed his gratitude to NAF and the logistics command. (NAN)
