NAN Correspondent organises unity football competition to boost unity in Nasarawa state

Nassarawa-Eggon (Nasarawa State), Dec. 7, 2019 (NAN) Mr Awayi Kuje, a Senior Correspondent with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has organised a unity football competition among the eight clans of Wakama community in Nassarawa-Eggon Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.

Speaking at the inauguration of the event  on Saturday, Nassarawa-Eggon, Kuje said he decided to organise the competition as a way of promoting peace, unity and hunt for talents at the grassroots.

He said that the competition was also born out of his desire to give back to his community that made him “what he is in the society today.”

Similarly, Usman Umbugadu, Aren Akun, commanded the organiser for contributing to peace and unity among the people at the grassroots.

He noted that football competition had rules and regulations, hence the need for all teams to take the results of every match in good faith.

On his part, Chief Adams Nangba, District Head of Wakama, said the competition would engage youths positively.

He described sports as a venture capable of steering youths toward positive cause by providing them means of livelihood among other advantages.

“Sports in a very big business, hence the need for the people to invest in it,”he said.

He, therefore, called on the officials to be fair to all teams in order to ensure the realisation of aims and objectives  of the competition.

Mr Dogo Shammah, Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, said that the state government would support talented and skillful players discovered during the competition to enable them achieve greater heights in football.

“The state government will help to secure clubs for players discovered in the course of the competition, as a way of promoting grassroots sports,” the commissioner said.

On his part, Mr Labaran Maku, former Minister of Information, who is also from the community, said more of such events were needed because” sports is a unifying factor for national integration.”

Maku, who was represented by Andrew Usman, promised to support the organiser to enable him make the competition a yearly event.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition which has eight teams from the eight clans of Wakama has Ezhiba Super Star and Alashe FC playing the first match as at the time of this report. (NAN)
