Nasarawa Assembly commends commission for training workers

Lafia, Oct. 25, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa state House of Assembly has commended the state’s Local Government Service Commission for its role in the training of council workers.

Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, gave the commendation during an oversight visit to the commission on Friday.

He said that the commission had shown remarkable interest in the training and retraining of local government workers in the state.

According to him, provision of in-service training is very crucial in ensuring effective service delivery and productivity.

Alkali urged the commission to remain committed to its duty by evolving viable policies that would improve the welfare of council workers and ensure realisation of set goals.

“We are happy to see how you have trained and retrained council workers in the state.

“The assembly will continue to support you in your efforts toward taking the commission and the local government system to greater level,” he said.

He said the committee had visited no fewer that 13 local government councils across the state as part of its oversight function.

“Our message has been simple, the council authorities must practically take steps to tackle laziness and ensure that their impact is felt by the people.

“We want them to tackle all acts capable of affecting development in their areas,” he said.

Earlier, the commission’s Chairman, Mr Sani Bawa, commended the committee for the visit, and described it as a crucial partner in the development of the third tier system.

Bawa said that the commission had commenced business skills training for 1,000 persons made up of staff, retirees and retiring officers.

“The essence is to equip them with skills that will improve their living standards,” he said. (NAN)
