Nasarawa legislature partners executive to boost citizens’ health

Lafia, March 18, 2020 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly says it will continue to partner with the executive arm towards ensuring effective healthcare service delivery.

Alhaji Labaran Shafa, the Chairman, House Committee on Health, stated this in Lafia while addressing newsmen after the committee’s meeting with management of the state’s Ministry of Health.

Shafa (APC-Toto/Gadabuke), said that the meeting was aimed at addressing grey areas on the activities of Saving One Million Lives (SOML), programme in the state.

He revealed that the ministry had now been granted permission to commence the implementation of the N1.8 billion SOML intervention in the state, which was earlier suspended by the House.

“We have met with the management of the state’s Ministry of Health on the need to brief us on the implementation of Saving One Million Lives intervention in the state.

“Based on the satisfactory explanation offered by the Commissioner for Health, we resolved that the ministry should continue with the implementation of the programme.

“This is in the interest of the health of our people and for the overall development of the state.

“We want to assure the state government of our determination to give the health sector and others the much needed support,” he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Mr Ahmed Baba Yahaya, appreciated the committee for giving the ministry the opportunity to shed more light on the activities of SOML in the state.

Baba-Yahaya also lauded the committee for its support to various health programmes in the state, which he said would go a long way in improving the health and lives of the people.

The commissioner restated the government’s commitment to initiating good health policies and programmes that would have direct impact on the health and standard of living of the people.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the House had earlier on Tuesday directed the ministry to suspend the utilisation of N1.8 billion under the SOML programme. (NAN)
