NDA, Hamburg University hold seminar on recovery of stolen artefacts

Kaduna, March. 10, 2020(NAN)The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in collaboration with the Hamburg University, Germany, has held seminar on recovery of stolen artifacts.

The Academy Public Relation Officer, Major Abubakar Abdullahi made the disclosure in a press statement issued on Tuesday in Kaduna.

Abdullahi said it was a one-day seminar to discuss how over 3000 Benin artifacts looted by Europeans during a massacre in 1897 could be returned back to the country from various museums around the world.

According to him, the seminar which drew together leading academics from within and outside Nigeria, was held at the JN Garba Hall, NDA Ribadu Campus in Kaduna on Monday.

The seminar was titled “The Benin Bronze: Globalising the Colonial Looting of Art Objects’’.

The participants pointed out that Benin Bronzes represents civilisation, culture and history highly treasured by the Benin people, and it was therefore very important to return these artefacts to their place of origin.

Abdullahi disclosed that papers presented at the seminar included: `British Colonial Rule and the Institutionalisation of Benin Artefacts since 1897′.

‘Masterpieces in Demand: An analysis of the Post-Colonial Trade of Benin Objects with Special Attention to the Role of German Actors from 1897’, among others.

He said that the seminar would push forward the frontiers of learning at the Academy, which is known as a great citadel of learning and leadership. (NAN)
