NGO demands prosecution of those caught embezzling public funds

Ilorin, Dec. 10, 2019 (NAN) The Centre for Community Empowerment and Poverty Eradication (CCEPE) has urged government at all levels to identify and prosecute those embezzling funds meant for the execution of public projects.

Mr Suleiman Kareem, the Chief Executive Officer of the centre, made the call on Tuesday in Ilorin at a rally to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day.

The rally was organised in partnership with the Actionaid Nigeria and the Inclusive Forum for Accountable Society (IFAS).

Kareem also urged government to publish budgetary allocation and releases to all Ministries,Departments and Agencies on monthly basis.

According to him, government needs to put necessary mechanism in place to activate monitoring and evaluation system to track and publish works executed in line with funds released, for public consumption.

“There is need to ensure that services provided are gender responsive and that constituency projects are accounted for by the legislators,” he added.

IFAS, he said, had discovered that development projects funded from the public fund were not executed as promised.

Also speaking, Mr Abdulrahman Ayuba, a Senior Programme Officer with CCEPE, said that the campaign was to create awareness among the people of Kwara.

He said that the rally was taken to Agunbiade-Alaparun road and TEXACO/Muyideen road in Ilorin because the quality of the road project was not in accordance with the specifications and amount recorded as expended. (NAN)
