NGO empowers over 40,000 women in Plateau

Jos, March 9, 2020(NAN) The Country Director, Women for Women, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Mrs Bukola Onyishi, says the orgainisation has empowered over 40,000 women socially and economically in Plateau.

Onyishi said this on Monday in Jos during an event it organised to mark the International Women’s Day celebration.

She said that the NGO had empowered women socially through sensitising them on their rights and also empowering them economically by teaching them a skill.

She also said the group paid them stipends at the end of every month.

The country director said that the theme for the international women’s day, “Each for Equal” was apt as it was pertinent that women should not be discriminated against.

She said women should be given equal rights as their male counterparts.

She also said that women needed to be aware of their rights to enable them to fight gender bias, cultural stereotypes and for them to broaden their perceptions.

Onyishi noted that in doing so, they would improve their situations and celebrate their achievements.

She also said that gender equality was essential for economies and communities to thrive.

Mrs Veronica Abe, a Deputy Director at the National Human Rights Commission , Jos office, commended WOMEN for WOMEN for sensitising and empowering women on their rights.

She then called on women to report to the human rights commission to seek redress when their rights were abused.

Some women who had benefited from the NGO’s programmes, commended the organisation for empowering them socially and economically.

One of them, Mrs Nankyer Andrew, thanked the NGO for empowering her, saying she had now become aware of her rights and was also economically empowered.

Andrew further revealed that the NGO had taught her the act of  treating every child equally not giving preference to a particular sex.

“The training has also taught me to seek redress when my rights or the rights of other women are abused,” she said.
