NSE marks first Engineering Day, canvasses entrepreneurship

Ibadan, March 4, 2020 (NAN) The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Oluyole Branch, Ibadan, on Wednesday marked the first World Engineering Day in Ibadan with a call on engineers to embrace entrepreneurship.
The Chairman of the branch, Abdurasaq Jimoh, said the programme was organised to celebrate the profession and to encourage engineering students.
He urged upcoming engineers to be creative and work toward being entrepreneurs, saying this would also help to develop the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the Day was ” ‘Engineering is for Creative Minds and Sustainable Development.”
Mrs Olutayo Alli, the Head of Department of Civil Engineering at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, said there was no boundary on what an engineer could do.
“Engineers can provide solutions to major problems of the country, whether social, economic or political.
“Engineers can end poverty by creating job opportunities; this is why youths have to practise the profession in order to be self sustaining.
“Mechanical engineers can end hunger by producing tractors and machines to help farmers and civil engineers can build storing banks.
“Engineers can solve medical challenges by producing quality medical equipment,” Alli said.
She urged students and professional engineers all over the world to play their roles in nation building by focusing on their real work and not mere professional accreditation.
“Go for more researches and solve problems,” she said.
She further advised female engineering students to be challenged and not to limit themselves.
Also speaking, Oyeyinka Oyelakin, the Chief Executive Officer of Green Pastures Nigeria Limited, advised youths to work hard in all that they do.
“Success don’t just drop on laps; it takes hard work and determination,” he said.
NAN recalls that UNESCO had picked March 4 in September 2019 for the celebration of the day (NAN)
