NTI confab urges FG to scale up budgetary allocation for education

Kaduna, Nov. 23, 2023 (NAN) The maiden edition of the Anuual National Conference of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna has called for an upward of the budgetary allocation for education by the Federal Goverenmemt.
This is contained in a communique issued on Thursday at the closing of a three-day conference held at the NTI headquarters in Kaduna.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had as its theme: ”Re-directing the Focus of Education Stakeholders Towards Modern Process of Producing Competent, Dedicated and Professional Teachers in Nigeria”.
The communique, signed by Prof. Musa Garba-Maitafsir, the Director of the Institute, said the upward review, amongst other factors, woulf help to improve infrastructure, delivery and general educational quality.
‘’There should be an improvement in remuneration of all teachers in line with the current economic realities of the country,” it added.
The communique also observed that there were disparities in training, resource allocation and application of effective teaching strategies by teachers in Nigeria.
It further stressed the need to leverage modern technology in educational delivery at all levels.
The communique stressed the need for teacher internship programme which would help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by providing interns with a carefully mentored experience.
“Having considered the benefits of the internship programme, it identified the University-based programmes, school-based programmes and hybrid models as the most suitable internship models for the Nigerian education internship programme,” the communique stated.
The conference, however, as part of its recommendations, prayed that; there should be a wider Sensitization/Advocacy on the proposed teacher internship programme.’
NAN reports that the major activities at the conference were presentation of papers by; the keynote speaker, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, titled, ‘Teacher Internship Programme: A Panacea for Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice in Teaching Profession.’’
The Lead Speakers were Prof. Oladele Akogun, Prof. Abubakar A. Bagudo of the Usumanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and Prof. Salisu Shehu, Vice-Chancellor, Al-Istigamah University, Sumaila, Kano State.
Stakeholders at the conference included; participants from; Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, National Commission for Colleges of Education and Universal Basic Education Commission.
Others were Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and National Commission for Nomadic Education, as well as National Board for Technical Education and National Mathematical Centre.
