Peace Corps frees 6 inmates of Wamba Prison

Wamba (Nasarawa State) Jan. 15, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Command of the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC), has freed six inmates from the Wamba Prison in Akwanga Local Government, after paying their fines.

Its Commandant, Mr Bala Joshua, who paid the fines and freed the prisoners in Wamba on Sunday, told newsmen that the gesture was part of the corps’ toward assisting the needy.

The authorities of the Wamba Prison, who did not disclose the amount paid to free the six inmates, however gave their names as Alex Sunday, John Peter, Abdullahi Umar, Ewuga Yahaya, Ogochukwu Sunday and Monday Zakka.

NAN reports that Joshua also gave N10,000 for the purchase of drugs for the remaining inmates, in addition to a bag of rice toward improving their feeding.

NAN quotes the Commandant as advising the prison inmates to be agents of change after serving their terms, pointing out that a prison term was not  a death sentence, but a phase in their lives that would soon become just history.

Joshua assured them of more support in the future, and challenged rich individuals and corporate bodies to donate to those in need so as to improve their living standard.

Responding, Mr Bulus Tari, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Wamba Prison, thanked the Corps for the gestsure and challenged other groups to emulate it

NAN reports that the latest gesture was the second by the Corps that freed five inmates of the Lafia Prison Jan. 1, 2017. (NAN)
