RTEAN to empower female drivers to enhance gender balancing

Lagos, Oct. 31, 2019 (NAN) The Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) says it will empower members of the Female Drivers Association of Nigeria (FEDAN) with vehicles to enhance gender balancing in the profession.

Alhaji Mohammed Musa, the National President of the association, told newsmen on Thursday in Lagos that the step was parts of the decision taken at the October NEC meeting of the association.

Musa said, FEDAN, being an affiliate of RTEAN, deserves to be strengthened to enhance their means of livelihood so as to contribute to the national development.

“We must empower women drivers and support them to feed themselves and members of their families.

“Members of FEDAN should be helped. We will get them vehicles to drive to help them. Men must carry women along in their activities,” he said.

The president reiterated his commitment to operate an open-door policy and give a fair deal to all sections of the union.

Musa added that NEC also resolved to end the disputes in the FCT, Ebonyi, Imo, Niger, Kaduna, Kogi and Benue branches to achieve the association’s goals.

He said that NEC had directed the state chairmen of Nasarawa and Niger to investigate the dispute in Benue branch and report its findings to the council.

The president urged all zonal chairmen to live up to their responsibilities.

He said that NEC also donated N850, 000 to one of its national officers from Bauchi whose house was razed by inferno while attending the NEC meeting.

Musa urged all members to always have the fear of God in all their dealings.

Eunice Odeghe, National President of FEDAN, commended Musa-led NEC for his plan to help female drivers, saying that the development would put food on the table of many of them.

Odeghe said: “We are supporting Alhaji Mohammed Musa, because we know he is a man of his words. Women have been recognised and RTEAN has really supported them.

“As women, we are not coming to compete with men, but rather, we are coming to support the transport sector since many state governments have started recruiting female drivers.” (NAN)
