Sexagenarian arraigned for allegedly beating up market women leader

Lagos, June 19, 2017 (NAN) For allegedly beating up a market women leader, a 60-year-old cooking pot repairer, Raphael
Ayodeji, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Ayodeji, a resident of Agbado area of Ogun, is facing trial for assault.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on June 13 at Dalemo
Market, Alakuko, a Lagos suburb.

He said the accused assaulted the women leader, Mrs Deborah Kareem, by giving her violent blows.

“The accused beat up the complainant because she asked him to pay the fee for environmental sanitation exercise.”

Okuoimose alleged that apart from beating her, the accused also tore her clothes.

The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years jail term for offenders.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in
like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, adjourned the case until July 5 for mention. (NAN)
