Speed Limiter: Enforcement commences in Bauchi

Bauchi, Feb. 1,2017 (NAN) Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bauchi
Command, Mr Paul Gar ,on Wednesday said enforcement of the Speed Limiting device on commercial vehicles had commenced in the state.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi that no hitches were anticipated as adequate enlightenment had been carried out.
He said reports reaching them indicated that 40 per cent of the fleets of Bauchi State government-owned mass transit company, Yankari Express, had been fitted with the device.

He therefore urged other commercial transporters to ensure prompt installation of the
device to avoid penalties.

“Series of public enlightenment campaigns in places of worships were carried out by our team to educate the populace on the advantage of the device and the need to install same.

`A phone-in program was equally done as well, during which a lot of people called to
clarify issues on the use of the device.

`Our meeting with stakeholders that includes Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers and  Yankari Transport among others, assisted in keeping the stakeholders informed on the matter, especially regarding commencement of enforcement on Feb.1,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Bauchi Branch, said the cost of the device was beyond the reach of its members.

The chairman of the union, Alhjai Sule Adamu, told NAN in Bauchi that under the current economic challenges,members would find it difficult to install the device at the N45,000

Adamu said that the union intended purchasing the device in bulk as against individual members buying at a high price.

“The new limit device is expensive to us because of the recession, but all arrangements had been made to ensure that all members secured the device through the union instead of buying it individually,’’ he said. (NAN)
