Niger by-election: Police chief lauds residents for peaceful conduct

Magama (Niger) March 14, 2020 ( NAN) The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Adamu Usman on Saturday expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the ongoing by-election for Magama/Rijau federal constituency in  the state.

Usman told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Magama Local government Area, after inspecting some polling units at Nasko, Unguwar, Salka and Ketsu, that the conduct of the electorate was commendable and orderly.

” I am very pleased with the residents for their orderly manner in all the polling units visited so far.

” I am satisfied with the political maturity demonstrated by eligible residents in all polling units visited,” Usman said.

The commissioner called on politicians and other stakeholders to always abide by the rules and regulations of electoral process.

He said that the police and other security agencies were ready to ensure that the By-election was peaceful, free, fair and credible.

Usman said that the police would ensure that voters’ rights were protected, adding that police and other security agencies were fully prepared to deal with trouble makers during and after the exercise.

He said the presence of security at all polling units would ensure that the by-election succeeded without threats to lives and property.

The commissioner also said that the command and other security agencies had put in place various security measures to guarantee a peaceful political atmosphere during and after the by-election in the state.

He said that reports from Rijau local government area indicated that the process went on peacefully and orderly without political violence and ballot snatching.

He warned that any person or groups found wanting would be arrested and prosecuted.( NAN)

Niger By-election: INEC begins distribution of sensitive materials – REC

Minna, March.12, 2020 ( NAN) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger on Thursday began the distribution of sensitive materials for the by-election in Magama/Rijau Federal constituency slated for March 14.

Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch, Minna.

Egwu said the electoral materials were moved from the CBN, Minna office to Magama/Rijau Local Government areas, accompanied by armed security personnel.

He explained that heavily armed security personnel would escort the materials to the two local government areas under tight security cover.

He said the sensitive materials, comprising ballot papers and result sheets, would be transported under tight security to the affected councils.

He explained that the distribution of the sensitive materials was done in the open glare of all to show the Commission’s transparency.

“The timely and transparent distribution of sensitive materials to the various local government areas showed that INEC is willing and prepared to conduct transparent and credible elections in the state.

“As you can see, the political parties are here, the security personnel are here and the press and other stakeholders are all here.

“Fortunately, INEC has always intended, with the support of the stakeholders, to improve on the delivery.” Egwu said.

He said that the sensitive materials were handed over to INEC by the CBN Minna Branch Controller, Alhaji Musa’u Tulu.

NAN reports that the materials were distributed in the presence of representatives of the four political parties participating in the by-election APC, PDP, APGA and ADC.

Sule Wushishi, the State Secretary of APGA expressed satisfaction with the INEC for providing require electoral facilities for the conduct of the by-election.

Wushishi called for deployment of more armed Security personnel’s to ensure peaceful political atmosphere during and after the election.

Alhaji Nasiru Leman, the APC representative also expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and distribution of the sensitive materials to the two councils.

Ladan called on eligible residents in the two local government areas that made up the constituency to adhere strictly with the rules and regulations to ensure peaceful electoral process.( NAN)

Minna, March 11, 2020 (NAN) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger says it has taken delivery of all sensitive materials for Saturday’s bye-election for Magama/Rijau federal constituency in the state.

Samuel Egwu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Wednesday that all the sensitive materials were in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Minna branch.

Egwu said the sensitive materials, which included ballot papers and result sheet forms are intact at the CBN.

He said that the commission would commence the distribution of the materials to the affected Local Government Areas after meeting with stakeholders on Thursday, March 12.

“We are fully ready for the House of Representatives bye-election for Magama/Rijau federal constituency with our trained electoral personnel for smooth conduct of the electoral process,”he said.

The CBN’s Branch Controller, Masu’u Tulu,  confirmed the custody of all the sensitive materials for the bye-election slated for March 14 in the state, saying they were all intact.

Tulu said the sensitive materials comprise ballot papers and result sheets for the conduct of the bye-election.

“We received the sensitive materials on Monday and stakeholders will inspect the materials in our office on Thursday March 12,”he said

He said that all the sensitive materials would be released to INEC anytime they were ready for distribution to the affected two council areas. (NAN)

Bye-election

Minna, March 9, 2020 ( NAN) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger says it has completed all arrangements for the conduct of bye-election for Magana and Rijau Federal Constituency in the state slated for March 14.

Prof. Samuel Egwu, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, disclosed this while addressing senior police officers at the Police Officers Mess in Minna on Monday.

“We are fully ready for the bye-election with our trained electoral personnel ready to conduct transparent and credible election for Magama and Rijau federal constituency,” Egwu said.

He said the commission had already distributed election materials and was waiting for the sensitive materials any moment from now to keep them at the Central Bank Minna for safe keeping.

He expressed confidence that the bye-election would be successful.

“We have prepared and equipped our personnel with basic electoral knowledge for the conduct of free, fair and transparent election come March 14″, he said.

The REC also commended the effort of the Police for providing required security before and during the bye-election.

Alhaji Adamu Usman, Commissioner of Police, said the command had already put in place security measures to ensure smooth implementation of all electoral processes in the state.

Usman said that the police would be visible in all the polling units to enable eligible residents in the two local government areas to participate in the exercise without threat to lives and property.

He warned leaders of political parties that would be participating in the election to impress on their supporters to shun all kinds of political violence, ballot snatching and thuggery during the exercise .

“Police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any person or group of people found disrupting the peaceful political atmosphere the state is known for,” he said.( NAN)

Kontagora ( Niger) March 7, 2020 ( NAN) The Niger Police Command says it is ready to provide security during the March by- election for Magama/Rijau Federal constituency in the state.

The Police Commissioner in Niger, Adamu Usman, gave the assurance on Saturday in Kontagora, while addressing stakeholders in the constituency ahead of the March 14 by- election.

Usman said that police and other security agencies in the state were working to ensure crisis-free election.

He explained that already, an effective operational order on how to provide security at each of the polling units in Magama and Rijau had been issued to the officers deployed for that purpose.

“We have mobilised sufficient armed personnel to provide security before, during and after the election,” the police commissioner said.

” I am giving 100 per cent assurance to all law-abiding residents of the constituency, that they can go about freely to exercise their franchise on March 14 without threat to lives and property,” he added.

Usman explained that the security measures put in place would enable eligible voters to participate in all electoral processes.

“We have put in place various security methods to enable residents have the opportunity to participate in electing leaders of their choice without threat to lives and property,” he said.

The police commissioner advised leaders of political parties and candidates to impress it on their supporters to shun all forms of violence and thuggery before, during and after the election.

“We will not tolerate any act capable of bringing confusion before, during and after the by-election, any person or groups found  disobeying orders  would be arrested and prosecuted.”

Earlier, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC)  Prof. Sam Egwu, said the by-election became necessary as a result of the death of the member representing  the area, Iliyasu Jafaru.
