Assembly tasks Nasarawa Govt to tackle unemployment

Lafia, Nov.7, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has pledged to collaborate with the State Government to tackle unemployment by through the state Vocational and Relevant Technology Board.

This is to create more job opportunities, fight poverty, reduce youth restiveness and improve on the lives of the citizens of the state.

Mr Daniel Ogazi (APC-Kokona East), the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, stated this on Thursday when the committee paid an oversight function to the board in Lafia.

Ogazi said that giving adequate attention to the board would help in tackling youth restiveness, poverty and improve on the welfare of the people of the state.

He also urged the people of the state to patronise locally made goods by the board such as bags, shoes and clothees, among others in order to create more job opportunities, generate revenue and make the beneficiariesself reliant.

“The aim of our visit is to see things by ourselves as the constitution has empowered us to do so in order to make sure that right things are done in the interest of development.

“We are happy with your various programmes aimed at tackling unemployment, poverty and improving on the standard of living of the people of the state.

“We heard of your challenges and I want to assure you of our readiness to collaborate with the executive in order to tackle it so as to provide opportunities for our youths and other people to excel,” he said.

He urged the management and other staff of the board to continue to train and impact positive knowledge especially in the area of skills acquisition programmes to enable the beneficiaries become self reliant.

Earlier, the General Manager of the Board, Alhaji Idris-Umar Idris, appreciated the committee for the visit and assured of his commitment to train youths and other people of the state in different skills acquisition programmes to enable them become self reliant.

“The training programme of the board is in two categories, the first is for those who are purely trained on skills of their choice without any academic exercise.

“This group is made up of those who want practical knowledge only. This group include adults, married women, the disable, etc

“And the second group consists of mostly young school leavers and drop out of Junior Secondary Schools, among others, to enable them become self reliant.

“The aim is to reduce unemployment and increase the earning capacity among school leavers and other categories of people in the state,” he said.

The general manager listed the challenges of the board to include shortage of staff and fund.(NAN)

Yobe Assembly to screen 20 commissioner nominees

Damaturu, Nov. 5, 2019 (NAN) The Yobe House of Assembly on Tuesday confirmed receipt of 20 nominees submitted by Gov. Mai Mala Buni for screening and confirmation as commissioners and members of the state executive council.
The Assembly, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, said the list was contained in a letter signed by Baba Mallam Wali, the acting Secretary to the State Government, addressed to the Speaker.
He said a commissioner was nominated from each of the 17 local government areas with three additional others from the three political zones of the state, making a total of 20 nominees.
Similarly, the governor sought the approval of the legislature for the appointment of 20 Special Advisers.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has fixed the commencement of screening of the nominees for Wednesday with former Sen. Alkali Jajere and four ex-members of House of Representatives.
The former lawmakers are Abdullahi Kukuwa, Goni Bukar, Yerima Lawan and Sidi Karasuwa.
Others slated for screening on Thursday include Messrs Garba Iliya, Mohammed Lamin, Musa Mustapha, Mala Musty and Bukar Dauda.
The screening will continue on Nov. 12 with Mohammed Gagiyo, Mohammed Lawan-Gana, Barma Shettima, Abdullahi Bego and Mohammed Idris.
The last batch of Dr Mairo Amshi, Umaru Wakili, Hajiya Hauwa Bah, Saleh Samanja and Prof. Mohammed Munkaila will hold on Nov. 13. (NAN)

Nasarawa Assembly commends NAYES over security, sanitation

Lafia, Oct. 29, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Youths and Sport has commended the roles of members of the state chapter of the National Youths Empowerment Scheme (NAYES) in assisting security agencies in the maintenance of peace and stability in the state.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Salihu Iyimoga, made the commendation when the committee visited the NAYES office in Lafia.
Iyimoga (ZLP-Doma North), said that the role played by the members of NAYES had also helped in ensuring environmental cleanliness and traffic orderliness in the state.
“We are here as part of our oversight function in assessing on how the scheme is doing with the view of addressing any challenge if discovered.
“The members of NAYES are helping in assisting the security agencies in the maintenance of law and stability as well as ensuring environmental cleanliness and traffic orderliness in the state,’’ he said.
He urged the members of NAYES to continue to discharge their duties without fear or favour in the interest of peace and development.
The chairman assured the members of the scheme of the committee’s determination to support NAYES to succeed.
Responding, the State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr Labaran Maina, commended the committee for the initiative.
He assured the committee of his commitment to improve the welfare of the members of the scheme in the state. (NAN)

Lafia, Oct. 21, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has screened Mr Dogo Shammah, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and eight others for appointment as commissioners.
The Speaker of the legislature, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, announced this on Monday during plenary after Shammah and the other nominees appeared for screening in Lafia.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Gov. Abdullahi Sule had on Oct. 16 presented 15 Commissioner designates to the House for confirmation.
The governor’s letter was read by the Majority Leader of the house, Alhaji Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North) at the floor of the house.
The screened nominees were Ahmed Yahaya from Toto Local Government Area; Philip Dada (Karu LGA); Othman Adam (Keffi); and Abdulkarim Kana (Kokona).
Others included Obadiah Boyi (Akwanga LGA); Yusuf Turaki (Awe); Salihu Alizaga (Nassarawa Eggon); and Otaki Allahnanah (Keana).
The speaker urged the screened commissioner nominees to positively contribute their quota to the development of the state, if finally sworn in by the governor.
He specifically enjoined Shammah to tackle the issue of fake news if is posted to the Ministry of Information.
Meanwhile, the screening of the remaining six commissioner nominees has been scheduled to hold on Oct. 22.
Those to be screened are Haruna Ogbole (Obi LGA); Ibrahim Ekye (Doma); Mrs Fati Sabo (Nasarawa); Abubakar Imam (Lafia); Hajiya Halima Jabiru (Lafia), and Mohammed Aliyu (Lafia). (NAN)

Nasarawa legislature pledges to give public health priority

Lafia, Oct. 17, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Thursday said that it would give priority to the passage of laws and resolutions that would improve public health in the state.
The House Committee Chairman on Health, Mr Labaran Shafa, made the promise when the committee visited Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) and Nasarawa State AIDS Control Agency (NASACA) in Lafia.
Shafa said that the legislature was committed to the development of the sector, adding that the importance of healthy people cannot be over-emphasised.
“The visit is part of our constitutional responsibilities to check on the activities of the health sector, which has to do with the health of the people of the state.
“The committee is out to know their challenges and ways to address them as the assembly is poised to give the people the best in order to improve on their health and their standard of living.
“We are here to assess the budget performance of your ministry, hospital and the agency with the view of addressing any challenge.
“We are committed to passing laws and resolutions that will have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.
“This is because a healthy nation is wealthy nation, hence the need for our determination to give the health sector the topmost priority it deserves,” he said.
Shafa urged Heads of the state health institutions to rededicate themselves to efficient discharge of duties of improving the health condition of the residents.
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary and other top management of its hospitals and agencies commended the committee members for the visit.
They assured the committee of their readiness to rededicate themselves to the provision of efficient health service delivery to people in the state. (NAN)

Nasarawa Eggon (Nasarawa State), Oct. 17, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has tasked local government council chairmen in the state to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.
Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, the Chairman of the committee, made the call on Thursday when the committee visited Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas, respectively.
According to Alkali, providing people oriented projects would also boost development at the grassroots, create employment opportunities and tackle rural-urban migration.
He said that the provision of infrastructural facilities would also improve on the health and socioeconomic activities of the people of the state.
He said that the visit was part of the House oversight function aimed at repositioning the local government system in the state.
The chairman said that the members of the House were happy that the issue of percentage payment had been dropped in the state.
“For four months now, we are happy that workers at the local government areas are receiving their salaries 100 per cent,” he said.
He also tasked the chairmen to explore more ways of improving on their revenue in their interest and for the overall development of the state.
Alkali assured of the assembly’s readiness to pass laws and resolutions that would have positive impacts on the lives of the people of the state.
Responding, Messrs Samuel Meshi, Abubakar Abbas and Mohammed Idris, the chairmen of Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa Eggon local government areas, respectively, lauded the initiative and commitment of the committee to rural development.
The chairmen renewed their commitment to key into people’s oriented projects that would be of benefit to residents. (NAN)

Toto (Nasarawa State), Oct. 14, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has advised teachers against absenteeism, lateness to work and other forms of truancy.
The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Mr Daniel Ogazi, gave the advice on Monday when the committee paid an unscheduled visit to Central Pilot Primary School, Nakuse, Toto Local Government Area.
According to him, such negative attitude could undermine the education sector in the state.
Ogazi decried the nonchalant attitude of some teachers, stressing that the committee will do everything humanly possible to ensure that primary education which is the foundation of learning is optimally repositioned in the state.
He warned that the committee would not hesitate to recommend punitive measures against any teacher found wanting in discharging his/her duties.
“I want to call on you to be serious and committed while discharging your duties in the interest of our children and for the overall development of the state.
“The State Government has invested massively in the education sector, hence the need for teachers to be up and doing towards improving on the standard of education in the state.
“We (legislature) will continue to do our best by giving the education sector the much needed priority it deserved,” he said.
Mrs Charity Agmada, the Head of the school, commended the committee for the visit and called for its sustenance.
She assured of their commitment to duties in order to improve on the standard of education in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on Oct. 7, the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, directed the standing committee chairmen and their members to embark on oversight functions from Oct. 8, in order to ascertain the level of the 2019 budget performance. Lafia (Nasarawa State), Oct. 9, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has solicited the assistance of the state House of Assembly toward resuscitating the government printing press in ensuring effective dissemination of information in the state.
Mr Allahnana Attah, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, made the appeal on Wednesday when he led management of the ministry on an advocacy visit to the House Committee on Information in Lafia.
He said that the ministry was charged with the responsibility of publicising government activities, and to promote culture and tourism in the state.
The permanent secretary appealed for the resuscitation of the government printing press in order to protect government secrecy as well as to boost the revenue base of the government.
“We have different departments in the ministry such as the Information, Culture, Tourism and the Government Printing Press in order to achieve result.
“The Culture and Tourism departments is saddled with the responsibilities of promoting the cultural values as well as the tourist attractions of the state.
“The Government Printing Press if resuscitated will not only protect the government image and information of the government from leakage but will also boost the revenue base of the government,’’ he said.
The permanent secretary assured the committee members of their readiness for being up and doing in publicising government activities for the benefit of all.
Also speaking, Mr Yusuf Musa, the General Manager, Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS), said that the station has wider coverage while assuring of its determination of continuing to publicise government activities.
He also appealed to the government through the state legislature to assist the station with Outside Broadcast Van (OBV) for the benefit of all citizens of the state.
The general manager told the committee that the state government spent N2.1 billion to digitise the station.
Responding, Hon. Mohammed Omadefu (APC-Keana), the Chairman of the committee, expressed happiness with the briefing by the ministry.
“This committee is poised to give its needed support to the ministry in order to take the state to the next level of development.
“Count on our support, we will collaborate with you to make sure you succeed,’’ he said. (NAN)

2019 Budget: Nasarawa Assembly commences oversight function

Lafia, Oct. 7, 2019 (NAN) The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has directed the chairmen of the house standing committees and their members to embark on oversight functions from Oct. 8, to ascertain the performance of the 2019 budget.
Abdullahi gave the directive on Monday during plenary in Lafia.
The speaker urged the committees not to compromise while performing their duties in the interest of development.
“ You are to commence the oversight function to the state MDAs from tomorrow (Oct. 8) and it will last for two weeks.
“Oversight function is one of our key responsibilities as members of this Honourable House.
“The people of Nasarawa State are looking forward unto us as their elected representatives to give them the best.
“The oversight function will give you the opportunity to ascertain the budget performance of the 2019 fiscal year.
“How much was budgeted and expended by the state ministries, agencies, parastatals and boards, as the government is preparing to present the 2020 budget,” he said.
The speaker assured the people of the state of the assembly’s readiness to work in synergy with the executive arm for the overall development of the state and the country at large.
In a related development, a Bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of kidnapping and other purposes therewith had passed first reading at the plenary.
The bill was sponsored by Mr Daniel Ogazi (APC-Kokona East), the Deputy Majority Leader of the House and Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology. (NAN)

Gov. Tambuwal approves appointment of Sokoto Assembly Clerk

Sokoto, Sept. 12, 2019 (NAN) Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has approved the appointment of Malam Abdulrazak Shehu as the substantive Clerk to the state House of Assembly.
This is contained in a press statement sign by the Public Relation Officer and Media Assistant to the House of Assembly, Mr Abdullahi Umar, in Sokoto on Thursday.
The statement said that until his appointment, Shehu hold the office of the Assembly clerk on acting capacity.
“Shehu was born in Sokoto town, attended Waziri Ward Primary School Kofar Marke and Government Teachers College, Bakura, now in Zamfara state.
“He then joined Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and College of Education, Sokoto.
“After his completion, he served the state for some years before proceeding to Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, for his first and second degrees, respectively,’’ it said.
It added that the clerk started his carrier as Master III in the state Ministry of Education where he rosed to the rank of Master I and also held the position of Principal Inspector of Education.
“He transferred his service to Sokoto state House of Assembly in the year 1999, where he held many positions.
“This, ranking from Principal Research Officer, Chief Research Officer, Assistant Director Research, Deputy Director Research, Director Research, Director ICT, Deputy Clerk and Acting Clerk respectively.”
It further stated that Shehu’s appointment takes effect from Aug. 28. (NAN)
