NEMA, FRSC deploy 3,000 personnel, mobile clinic for Yuletide in Adamawa

Yola, Dec. 24, 2019 (NAN) The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had deployed no fewer than 3,350 personnel to ensure smooth road traffic in Adamawa during the Yuletide.

Mr Abani Garki, NEMA Head of Operations in charge of Adamawa and Taraba States, disclosed this at the flag off of Operations Eagle Eye safety programme on Tuesday in Yola.

Garki said the operation was initiated by the agency to compliment the FRSC efforts in maintaining accident free Christmas and New year festivities.

“The agency had deployed several emergency staff and Mobile Clinic to compliment Federal Road Safety Corps efforts in ensuring rules and regulation of road traffic,” Garki said.

On his part, Mr Hussaini Muhammed, the Commander, Adamawa Road Safety Command, commended NEMA for the initiative.

Muhammed said FRSC and NEMA shared many things in common, and therefore called for effective collaboration.

“So far, the state Command in collaboration with NEMA deployed 3,350 personnel and about 26 ambulances and Mobile Clinic.

“The effort is to ensure safety on major highways across the state during Christmas and New Year festivities,” Muhammed said. (NAN)

Akure, Nov.14, 2019(NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State on Thursday stressed the need for motorists to adhere to safe-driving culture to prevent accidents on the highway during the forthcoming yuletide.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, made the call at a news conference as part of activities to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Road Accidents in Akure.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 2019 United Nations’ Road Crash Victims Remembrance Day’s theme is: “Life is not a Car Part”.
Adeleye explained that the news conference was aimed at showcasing the event that would generate consciousness on road safety among the motorists and other road users who should always adopt preventive measures.
The sector commander said that if motorists followed the rules and regulations of traffic on the highway zero crashes and zero fatalities could be achieved.
According to him, motorists should always adhere to safe-driving principles while on the move.
“This is because you don’t need road safety to be on the road before you do the right thing; we need attitudinal change so that everybody, whether road safety is on highway or not, we do a right thing.
“We are so much in a hurry to do things we have not done since nine or 10 months especially as we are approaching end of the year.
“Zero crashes is possible but it depends on the mindset of the motorists that ply the road.
“Let us take it easy so that even if there are going to be crashes let us have zero fatality because life is no car part,” he said.
He also called on religious leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other major stakeholders to join forces with the FRSC against the menace of road accidents across the state.
Adeleye also charged his officers and men to resist the temptation of compromising their roles by taking bribe from traffic offenders on the highway.
“We are conscious that we have some of our men who are uncivilised in terms of the way they approach offenders and we are working towards it to ensure that we correct them.
“In terms of taking bribe or compromising, I always tell our officers and men that any money taken on highway is blood money.
“When you take money on the highway, you are taking the money to compromise the safety of that person.
“Taking money from someone that is speeding means that you are giving him a liberty to continue speeding and giving him a liberty to go and crash.
“So, it should dawn on you, you may not be there when the crash happens but you have encouraged him to cause that crash.
“So, it’s blood money and blood money does not last,” he maintained.(NAN)

Road accident claims 5 in Ondo

Akure, Oct. 20, 2019 (NAN) No fewer than five persons were confirmed dead after a Sharon Volkswagen car, with registration number KTU 706 BW ran into a moving truck at Awoyaya, between Ore and Ondo town on Sunday.

Mr Rotimi Adeleye, the State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the telephone.

He said that the accident occurred between 3:00 am. and 3:32 am. on Sunday.

Adeleye, who attributed the causes of the accident to over speeding, said that the bodies of the dead had been deposited at the mortuary of the general hospital in Ondo town, while the injured had been taken to the Trauma Centre, also in the town.

According to the sector commander, eight people were involved in the accident, adding that their luggage and the vehicle involved had been taken to the divisional police headquarters at Enuowa in Ondo.

“We were called through our emergency number by an unknown person, informing us about the accident and immediately we swung into action.

“According to the information at our disposal, the truck was in front of the vehicle, while both of them were travelling from Ore in Odigbo local government to Ondo town before the accident happened at Awoyaya area.

“Immediately the accident occurred, five people died on the spot, while three were injured. It is unfortunate, however, that the truck did not stop,” Adeleye said.

He, therefore, promised that FRSC, together with other sister agencies, would ensure that the truck and its driver were apprehended.

Adeleye appealed to motorists to shun night journey to avoid untimely death.

“We are appealing to our motorists to shun night journey because it is very dangerous. Fatality of night journey is high, apart from the fact that you won’t see any immediate rescue effort when an accident occurs.

“Also most of our drivers have challenges with their sights; so night travel must be avoided at all times,” he said. (NAN)

3 killed in Ondo auto crash

Akure, Oct. 4, 2019 (NAN) Three young persons were killed on Friday after a car ran into a stationary truck on Oyemekun Road in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Confirming the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, the State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said that the accident happened between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Adeleye, who said that five people were involved in the accident, said that FRSC operatives had deposited the corpses of those who died  at the morgue of the state specialist hospital in Akure.

“They were five in number inside a Lexus jeep vehicle and it was learnt that they were coming from a night club this morning and were also on speed before they ran under a stationary truck.

“Three of them died on the spot while the other two are under critical condition,” he said.

Adeleye, who admonished parents to watch over their children to avoid sudden death, said that those involved were in the age bracket of  20.

“All those involved are in their mid twenties of age, so parents should keep watch over their children.

“ As at the time when the accident happened the children should be under their parents’ watch and the victims were coming from the club which is unfortunate.

“Most importantly, if people have reason to go to the club, whoever that is going to drive should avoid taking alcohol even when others are drinking to avoid preventable death,” he said.(NAN)

Akure, July 5, 2019(NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, says it will clamp down on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators without number plates and drivers license in the state.

The State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, said this at a one-day sensitisation for motorcycles and tricycles operators in the state.

The programme was to sensitise them to the commencement of Aug. 1, enforcement on number plates and riders licence violations.

Adeleye explained that the clamp down had become necessary to reduce the growing rate of crimes and crashes associated with motorcycles and tricycles in the country.

The sector commander said that the enforcement would also help to improve upon the existing National Drivers and Vehicles Database.

“The issue of drivers license is not a recent thing, it has been in existence and it is a way to ascertain the authenticity of the riders.

“Having number plates and drivers license is to show that the commercial riders are certified to ride on highway,” he said.

According to him, the reason we have a lot of crashes cause by commercial riders is because of lack of information and expertise.

“What we are doing now is to sensitive and give public enlightenment because we still have one month window now.

“However by Aug. 1, any Okada (commercial motorcycle) rider or tricycles without properly registered documents and anybody riding it without drivers license will be penalised,” he warned.

Also speaking, Dr Doyin Adebowale, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Special Duties and Strategies, said that the state government was ready to support and ensure full compliance in the state.

Adebowale, who explained that most of the accidents caused by the commercial motorcycle were as a result of unprofessional driving, noted that most motorcyclists delved into the business due to situation they found themselves.

“This will aid the issue of security in the state and the country as a whole and it will also help to identify those who are perpetrating crime in the name of commercial motorcycle riders.

“In Ondo State we have started to enroll and capture commercial motorcycle riders’ names since 2018 and still ongoing so that we can know who and who is riding motorcycle as a business,” he said.

Mr Bashiru Obanla, Coordinator of Motorcycle Riders in Akoko North East, appreciated the FRSC and state government for the sensitisation for them to see reason to obtain their drivers license.

Obanla, therefore, promised that all commercial motorcyclists in the state would ensure compliance with the directives.(NAN)

Benin, June 3, 2019 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised Nigerians to adopt the use of bicycles to achieve healthy lives and foster friendly environment in the country.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Edo, Mr Anthony Oko, gave the advice on Monday in Benin at the flag off of activities to mark the second edition of the United Nations (UN) World Bicycle Day in the state.
Oko said that the advantages of bicycle as a means of transportation were numerous.
He said that aside the fact that riding bicycle helps improves one’s physical fitness, “the process also boosts one’s health, environment friendly, affordable and reliable”.
He said that it was in view of this that stakeholders were encouraged to advance the use of bicycles to foster sustainable development, promotion of health, strengthening of education and prevention of diseases.
Other advantages include improving mutual understanding, facilitation of social inclusion and culture of peace, he said.
He stressed that the corps, desirous of achieving its mandate, came up with strategies and initiatives aimed at actualising the Vision 20:20:20 of making the country one of the safest nations in the world, hence the theme “Cycling for a Healthy Life Style’’.
Oko also said that it was in view of this that the corps acceded to the UN convention on road safety and resolution, which is being marked as World Bicycle Day annually on June 3.
The sector commander said the day was to acknowledge the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle which had been in use for about two centuries.
He said this initiative underscores the need for government to either develop or modify existing policies, provide road infrastructure and other systems to sustain and make cycling safe and attractive in cities.
Oko underscored the need for collaboration between the FRSC and Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) to make the riding of bicycle trendier while other stakeholders were encouraged to sustain the awareness for the good of the country. (NAN)

Yuletide: We are focussing on Lagos-Ibadan Highway, other routes- FRSC

Lagos, Dec.11, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it is poised to monitor traffic along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and other highways to curb road accidents during the yuletide.

Mr John Meheux, the Zonal Commanding Officer, Ogun and Lagos, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Meheux said that in view of ongoing construction works on the roads, both regular and special marshals would be deployed round the clock to arrest vehicles that flout traffic rules and regulations during the monitoring.

“In Zone 2, we are paying much attention to the highways, especially the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway where construction are ongoing with reference to the diversions at Mowe and Ibafo in the Ogun corridor.

“Both the FRSC regular and special Marshals will be positioned 24 hours to monitor the traffic and arrest the offenders also on the Lagos-Ijebu-Ode route,’’ he said.

According to him, the corps will be strict on en-route violation on all the identified corridors during the yuletide.

The FRSC commander said that the corps was in touch with the stakeholders and construction companies to ensure that palliative works were promptly done at various portions of the roads before the end of the year.

Also, Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Lagos State Sector Commander, told NAN that the sector had started rigorous safety campaigns in various Motors Parks across the state to create safer motoring environment during the season.

Omeje said that the campaign was in consonance with the corps’ mandate and a demonstration of unrelenting effort at stemming the trend of road traffic crashes.

“It has become part of us in FRSC that during this period of the year, the corps will double its efforts in actualising one of its core mandate of educating the motoring public.

“We sensitise them on proper use of the highway through robust enlightenment campaigns and at the same time, reinforce our patrol operations with prompt rescue services to traffic victims on the highways.

“We advise the drivers to shun alcoholic drinks and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, overloading and dangerous driving,’’ he said.

NAN reports that FRSC had cautioned the motoring public over reckless driving as 1,054 people were killed in auto crashes within 33 months along the Lagos-Ogun routes.

The zonal commander had made the disclosure in his remarks during the “2018 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’’ in Lagos.

Lagos, Nov. 12, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned the motoring public over reckless driving as 1,054 people were killed in auto crsahes within 33 months along the Lagos-Ogun routes.

Mr John Meheux, the Zonal Commanding Officer in Charge of  Ogun and Lagos States, made the disclosure in his remarks at the “2018 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’’ in Lagos.

Meheux said that the zonal records in the last two to three years show the number of people involved and killed by auto crashes in various corridors within both states.

According to him, the corps wants to see structures put in place to curb crashes and deaths on the roads.

The zonal commander also appreciated the teams, agencies and stakeholders working tirelessly with FRSC on the road to ensure safety at any point in time.

The FRSC boss said that the corps was bringing back advocacy to the front burner to ensure adequate safety and cautious driving among the commercial drivers.

” Most of the accidents are caused by attitudinal disposition which are mainly responsible for number death in auto crashes,” he added.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Lagos State Sector Commander, in his remarks, said that no efforts put in place to curb crashes on the road was too much.

Omeje called on stakeholders and corporate organisations to join hands with the corps in terms of resources to assist the FRSC to curb the menace of crashes on the road.

He said that FRSC was an avenue or a channel through which any organisation could exercise its corporate social responsibility to the people.

“However, we advise drivers to shun reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, overloading and the use of bad tyres,’’ he said.

Kanayo Okonkwo, a Member of the Health Emergency Initiative (HEI), also advised the motoring public to drive safely and shun drunk driving habit.

Okwonkwo said that HEI is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) established to give succour to indigent patients during emergencies , especially accident victims.

According to him, the NGO has specifically collaborated with public hospitals and others to ensure that critical accident victims are treated and stabilised before the arrival of the family.

“We have set up a “None Should Die” initiative to ensure free treatment of accident victims in some hospitals during emergency.

“As for drivers, you do not need anybody to use weapons on you before you drive safely

“We urge drivers to drive safely and ensure that passengers got to their various destinations peacefully,’’ he said.

Mr Joseph Anibaba, Head of Operation, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), said that accidents were main causes of death in this part of the world.

Anibaba thanked the FRSC for its efforts in giving regular awareness to motorists across the various parks in the state.

“This is 18 years of LASAMBUS operation in the state, most of the cases recorded are commercial vehicles.

“Commercial buses should make sure they comply by the rules and regulations and avoid bad portions of the road to avert accident.

“At times, the FRSC officials on the road may be there to caution the drivers on the danger ahead but some of the motorists speed off, seeing the officials on the road which later resort to crashes ahead,’’ he said. (NAN)

Bwari (FCT), Nov. 3, 2018 (NAN) The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Saturday said it has conducted recruitment examination for about 15,000 candidates of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) across the country.
The Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishak Oloyede, disclosed this to newsmen during the conduct of the exercise in Abuja.
The exercise, he said, was being conducted at the board’s Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country and have so far been reported successful, except for a centre in Taraba.
“There has been no problem; all centres are doing well but at a centre in Taraba, some of their computers malfunctioned but we have ordered an immediate relocation of the candidates to another centre,” he said.
Oloyede reiterated the board’s readiness to deliver a transparent system for all forms of examinations conducted through the CBT system of the board.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, FRSC Corps Marshal, in July said that the corps would recruit additional 4,650 officers and procure new operational vehicles to improve road safety management in the country.
According to him, the corps will employ the best in road safety management in the second part of the year.
A NAN correspondent who visited one of the centres at Bwari Abuja, reports that two alleged imposters were apprehended by security agents at the centre while trying to access the examination with same printout which had the same seat number.
One of them, Apeh Baba, who spoke to newsmen after being apprehended, said he mistakenly picked his friend’s photocopy of the examination printout from home and decided to attempt to use it.
He however begged to be forgiven for the illicit act, while awaiting to be handed over to the police for further action. (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 25, 2018 (NAN) Traders are recording brisk sales at the ongoing Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recruitment and physical screening at the National Stadium in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Some of the traders told NAN in separate interviews on Tuesday that the exercise was an opportunity for them to sell their wares.
The traders said they had to close up their shops temporarily at Utako, Wuse and Garki markets in order to display their wares at the recruitment venues in view of the high patronage.
Pastor Peter Umeh, a trader who sales white canvas, shoes, stockings and short trousers at the venue, said the sales were encouraging but decried the low profit margin he recorded.
“My goods are essential for the candidates like white canvas shoes, T-shirts and others; the sales are encouraging but the current economic challenges, customers are begging for discount.
“We are encouraged by the turn over because the candidates are many and patronage is quite high.
“For instance, we sell the shoes at N1,500 in the market but here they priced it down to N800, the T-shirts are from N1,000 but they are pricing them at N700 and we have to sell,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Mr Timothy Chukwuma, a professional photographer at the recruitment venue, said the patronage was not adequate because most candidates came with their passport photographs.
He however added that the photographs were taken and printed in two minutes at a subsidised rate of eight copies at N700 and four copies at N400 for candidates who forgot or misplaced their passport photographs.
In the same vein, Mr and Mrs Samuel Akhigbe, who were engaged in photocopying business, said they were excited over the sales recorded since the commencement of the screening.
They noted that the candidates were mandated to make photocopies of their documents which had resulted to high patronage, adding that each copy is done at N50 because they use generating plants.
Similarly, food and confectionery vendors were not left out as they also record high patronage from the exercise.
Mrs Irene Okoro, who sells soft drinks and snacks, said she was happy with the patronage from candidates and people around.
“I have been selling since morning; I thank God for this exercise, I wish they will continue till next month; I am so happy with my sales.
“I thank God for everything,’’ she added.
NAN reports that the exercise, which began on Sept. 24, will last on Sept. 30. (NAN)
