Eid-el-Kabir: Ogun FRSC deploys 1,000 marshals for special patrol

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), Aug. 16, 2018 (NAN) Clement Oladele, Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ogun, on Thursday said the command has concluded plans to launch one-week intensive patrol programme to reduce accidents during the Sallah festival.

Oladele, who made this known in a statement in Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday, said the exercise was necessary based on the expected increase in movement of people, goods and services during the period.

He said the campaign would begin on Aug. 17 and come to an end on Aug. 26, adding that it was aimed at ensuring order and free traffic flow during the period.

The FRSC boss said a 24-hour surveillance to monitor traffic situation would be conducted around Lagos-Ibadan, Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta-Sagamu and Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango- Otta-Lagos corridors.

According to Oladele, 1,000 personnel including regular and special marshals will be deployed round the state to maintain free flow of traffic and highway safety during the period.

“Logistics have been put in place and I can say that all our 22 patrol vehicles will be deployed for the effectiveness of the exercise.

“Our marshals will be on the road round the clock to monitor the roads and enforce compliance with highway codes.

“Already, we have special units at major motor parks sensitising motorists on proper road usage and safe luggage limits.

“The special patrol operations will focus on, excessive speed, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, lane indiscipline and use of phone while driving.

“We will also frown at seat belt, overloading, tyre, speed limiting devise violations as well as and passenger manifest violation by commercial vehicles.’’

The FRSC boss said special road side clinics and three life support ambulances would be stationed at major flash points along the road corridors to give instant first aid to accident victims.

According to him, all our para-medics will be on ground. They will provide first aid to accident victims before they are taken to the hospital for required treatments as the case may be.

Oladele appealed to road users to drive cautiously, adding that anyone found flouting the law would be appropriately prosecuted.

“Motorists traveling during the period are advised to be extra careful and pay special attention to construction areas where overtaking is prohibited and maximum speed perked at 50km per hour.

“I can assure road users that broken down vehicles will be towed within the shortest time and there will be almost zero experience of gridlocks during the period.

Abuja, July 30, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has threatened to sanction driving schools involved in certificate racketeering.
Mr Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Kassim quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, saying that the corps had declared war against driving school certificate racketeering and would not spare anyone caught in the act.
Oyeyemi said he had called on members of the driving school profession to appreciate the responsibility they owe the society through credible discharge of their tasks.
He advised them to uphold the ethics and standards of the profession.
Oyeyemi enjoined the Association of Driving School Operators of Nigeria (ACDSON) and the Association of Driving School Instructors of Nigeria (ADSIN) during a national workshop to comply with the standard.
The corps marshal charged the participants to use the opportunity to critically examine how they could find new ways of improving on the quality of driver education and road safety in Nigeria.
He said that the corps needed the assistance and cooperation of all to succeed in the campaign by putting a firm check on this scourge threatening the security of lives and properties.
“At moments like this, while imbibing new ideas, it is necessary to appraise the ongoing with the aim of seeing and correcting grey areas,” he said.
He recalled that some driving schools had been suspended from the portal for some time now due to sharp practices like illegally graduating trainees in less than the legally prescribed 26 mandatory hours. (NAN)

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), June 27, 2018 (NAN) A road accident on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun on Wednesday, involving two trucks has left one person dead and two others critically injured.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ijebu-Ode.

Akinbiyi, who said the accident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at Atoyo axis on the expressway, disclosed that one of the trucks with registration number; Lagos XR 359 LSD was involved in a headlong collision with an IVECO truck.

The IVECO truck was marked Lagos FST 805 XL.

“According to eye-witness accounts, the driver of the IVECO truck, left his own side of the road and faced incoming traffic, which led to the collision with the other truck coming from the East.

“Two males were injured, including the driver of the IVECO truck. Unfortunately, the driver of the DAF truck died on the spot.

“Officials of TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps were on ground to control traffic,” Akinbiyi said.

The spokesman said that the dead driver and those injured were taken to the Ogun State General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode while the two vehicles were towed to Ogbere Police Station.

FRSC inaugurates 232 new Special Marshals in Lagos

Lagos, June 9, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Saturday in Lagos, inaugurated 232 new Special Marshals to join in reducing traffic challenges within the Lagos metropolis.

Mr John Meheux, the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Ogun and Lagos State, urged the newly inaugurated members to be good ambassadors of the organisation and work toward achieving the goals and objectives of the corps.

Meheux, represented by Mr Segun Akinyemi, the Zonal Head of Operations, also advised the members to uphold the calling of the special marshal to educate citizens on the excesses on roads.

“As a special marshal, you have a calling to educate Nigerian citizens on the excesses on the roads.

“Lots of people are dying on the roads and there is solution to the challenge; the solution is you by bringing in sanity to our driving culture to avert crashes.

“You have a duty on the road, it can’t be done alone by the men in uniform; that is why we are here today to sacrifice our time to bring orderliness to our roads,’’ he said.

Also, Dr Sini Kwabe, National Coordinator, Special Marshal, advised the newly inaugurated members to have positive motive toward the service.

According to Kwabe, many people have the desire to join the special marshal but with the wrong motives.

“I am happy to see the kind of caliber of people inaugurated today.

“We need your cooperation to achieve the same objectives of the service.

“As a special marshal, you have to show the difference; don’t use your regalia to intimidate people on the road.

“FRSC is the only agency in the country that is certified with ISO, so, we have to maintain the standard,’’ he said.

The national coordinator also said that the special marshal team, with about 18,000 members nationwide, was very unique being the only volunteer group that had the right to arrest and prosecute the offenders.

He urged them to work as a family with the FRSC as it was “a call to service and we have to sow seed to save lives’’.

Earlier, the Lagos State Sector Head of Special Marshal, Mr Bashiru Adeyemi, congratulated the newly inaugurated members for the successful completion of their screening.

Adeyemi said that over 400 prospective applicants were registered since 2017 but only 232 scaled through the final exercise.

“Following the successful completion of the screening, four-session training programmes were organised.

“The training spanned a period of four saturdays during which the trainees were trained on drills, traffic control procedures, FRSC Establishment Act (2007) and the roles of special marshal.

“Operational patrol ethics were also imparted into them,’’ he said.

He advised them to be mindful of the main objective for joining the team and brace up for the task and challenges ahead.

“It is a call to serve humanity with your resources, time and energy; it requires utmost dedication and commitment,’’ he said.

Mrs Toyosi Olasoji, one of the new members told NAN that she was happy to scale through the screening.

Olasoji said that she would work hard toward achieving the goals of the scheme.

Another new member, Pastor Olugbenga Kalejaiye, said that being a member of the special marshal was a great responsibility that must be fulfilled to save lives.

Kalejaiye said that he would dedicate his time and energy to ensure sanity on the roads through the volunteer scheme. (NAN)

FRSC pledges partnership with FCT SWAN for sports development

Abuja, May 23, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday pledged to partner with the FCT Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) FCT to develop sports in Nigeria.

Boboye Oyeyemi, the FRSC Corps Marshal, made the pledge in Abuja while receiving members of the new FCT SWAN Executive Committee and others led by the Chairman, Ndubueze Chidoka.

The Corps Marshal who was represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal, Training, Adewole Lawal, promised to involve FCT SWAN in the coverage of all its sports activities.

He said the Corps was doing very well in all areas of sports it has been involved in, adding that a partnership with SWAN would ensure adequate publicity.

“Partnering with SWAN is a great deal because all our sports activities will be given priority.

“We are also going to ensure that your members will be attached to each of our teams to ensure adequate coverage of our activities,’ Oyeyemi said.

The Corps Marshal also pledged to train FCT SWAN members as Special Marshals as part of FRSC’s effort to reduce accidents on Nigerian roads.

“FRSC welcomes people that will partner with it to reduce crashes on our road. So, I can assure you that the agency will be willing to train FCT SWAN members as Special Marshals.

“We always welcome any Nigerian who will want to assist us in the reduction of road crashes on our highways.

“We don’t believe that we can do this job alone. We believe we need the support of everybody in this country.

“And SWAN is a formidable association that we can equally leverage on to ensure that road safety is properly propagated,’’ he said.

Oyeyemi also solicited FCT SWAN partnership to ensure that drivers attached to football teams and clubs are adequately trained.

“Each time we hear that there is an accident involving players, we are always worried.

“The Corps Marshal has directed that we synergise with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and other sports associations to ensure that all drivers conveying players are properly trained,’’ he said.

Earlier, Chidoka had asked the Corps to ensure that FCT SWAN members were attached to various FRSC sports teams for proper coverage of their activities and better results.

“We know that the FRSC is doing well in various sports, such as football, handball, tennis, athletics and voleyball, as well as others.

“Having looked at these programmes, we thought it wise to partner with FRCN to ensure that Nigeria get it right in the area of sports.

“Because when we don’t get it right in sports, it will affect us in all ramifications, talking about the nation’s youths and its workforce,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the FRSC handball women team, Safety Babes, won the first phase of the Prudent Energy Handball League recently.

Their male counterparts finished third in the league held in Abuja.(NAN)

Dutse, May 12, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has deployed 330 personnel and four ambulances ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day working visit to Jigawa, beginning from Monday.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Angus Ibezim, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Saturday.
Ibezim said that the personnel include 70 officers, 205 marshals and 55 special marshals.
The sector commander added that 15 patrol vehicles and two heavy duty towing trucks are also prepared for the president’s visit.
According to him, the personnel will be stationed at strategic locations and other flash points to control traffic, crowd and conduct rescue mission in case of any eventuality.
Ibezim further stated that the officers would partner other security agencies in the state in providing maximum security throughout the period.
However, he said that the deployment of the personnel and equipment would commence on May 13.
NAN also reports that Buhari is expected to inaugurate five “regional roads” and five township roads across the state, among other activities, during the visit. (NAN)

Jos, March 29, 2018 (NAN) The police in Jos on Thursday arraigned 10 men in an Upper Area Court, Kabong, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau, for allegedly destroying a building and vehicles of Federal Road Safety Corps. (FRSC)
The defendents are Abbas Sharanu, Saheed Lawal, Musa Jibrin, Mapi Musa, Bashir Ibrahim, Jethro Danas, Panam Hassan, Usman Umaru, Sanusi Sanusi and Auwal Abubakar, all of Bauchi Road, Jos.
They were charged with criminal conspiracy, disturbance of public peace, joining unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The police prosecutor, Mr E.A Inegbenoise, told the court that one Bernard Tele, of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested and brought the defendants at the Nasarawa Gwom police station on Feb. 26.
Inegbenoise said that the defendants all armed with cutlasses, knives and jerry cans of fuel destroyed a building and cars at the FRSC office at Bauchi Ring Road.
The prosecutor added that they also destroyed cars belonging to motorists which were impounded in the compound and inflicted injuries on one Ira Ambram.
The offences contravened sections 97, 113, 341 and 247 of the Penal Code.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate, Mr S.N Dashe, admitted the defendants to bail of N50, 000 each and a surety each in like sum.
Dashe said that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and submit to the court a copy of their passport photograph and permanent voter card.
He thereby adjourned the matter until May 22, for hearing. (NAN)

Abuja, March 26, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has mobilised all its field and sector commands nationwide for Special Patrol in order to ensure hitch-free Easter celebrations.

Tagged 2018 Easter Special Patrol, the exercise, according to the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, is scheduled to run from March 28 to April 3 with focus on 39 corridors across the country.

Kazeem told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the special operation was aimed at ensuring drastic reduction in road traffic accidents and attendant deaths, among other objectives.

“The public holiday expected to be declared by the Federal Government will definitely cause an increase in vehicular movement across the nation’s highways.

“As such it is expedient that the corps prepares ahead of time to curtail the situation in order to ensure smooth travel experience by motorists.

“The associated risks involved in upsurge of traffic are the occurrences road traffic crashes, road obstruction among others, which the corps must strategise to mitigate and we are doing that already.

“This falls in line with the 2018 corporate strategic goal of improved enforcement and rescue services to reduce road traffic crashes by 15 per cent and fatalities by 30 per cent.

“It is in view of the above that administrative instructions have already been issued to guide field commands on the course of action for a hitch-free exercise.’’

Kazeem outlined other objectives of the exercise to include effective traffic management to ensure free traffic flow, high visibility of FRSC personnel on the highways and robust public enlightenment.

Others are strict enforcement of traffic laws and regulations, prompt response to road traffic crashes, adequate supervision, surveillance and monitoring of commands’ activities.

The identified critical corridors, according to him, include Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi, Maiduguri-Biu-Numan-Jalingo-Wukari, Abuja-Lokoja-Okene, Enugu-Abakaliki-Ogoja-Mfum, Ibadan-Ife-Akure-Owo-Ifon-Benin and Benin-Warri-Patani-Sagbama-Ahoada-Port Harcourt highways, among others.

The FRSC spokesman said that more than 22 traffic gridlock areas had also been identified nationwide, adding that adequate personnel had been deployed to ensure free flow of traffic.

He listed the areas as Asaba by Bridge Head, Upper Iweka Road in Onitsha, Ore by construction area, Gwagwalada by bridge in the FCT, Katsina Ala by bridge in Benue, among others.

According to him, the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has instructed all field commands to deploy personnel alongside special marshals and other relevant stakeholders on all the designated corridors and areas.

Kazeem added that the 2018 Easter Special Patrol operation would also focus on critical traffic offences such as failure to install speed limiting device, overloading and lane violations.

Others are use of phone while driving, driving with expired or worn-out tyres, driving without spare tyres and traffic obstructions.

He stated that more than 200 mobile courts have already been put on standby nationwide to prosecute traffic law offenders.

According to him, the field commands have been directed to ensure that the mobile courts sit throughout the seven-day period, and encourage magistrates to increase their sitting time for effective prosecution of traffic offenders.

He said the Corps would conduct “traffic count’’ on identified critical corridors such as Lagos-Ibadan, Kano-Katsina, Abuja-Kaduna, Abuja-Lokoja, Benin-Sagamu, Sokoto-Gusau, among others.

He said the Operations Department at the headquarters would deploy special monitoring teams to ensure that the exercise held as planned.

While soliciting the cooperation of motorists and other road users, Kazeem advised those with complaints against any FRSC personnel to report to the nearest field or sector command office or reach him directly at a.kazeem@frsc.gov.ng. (NAN)

Lagos, Feb 18, 2018 (NAN) Pastor Emmanuel Adebiyi of The Apostolic Church, Yaba, Lagos, has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to improve enlightenment on the rudiments of safety on the highways to prevent road crashes.

Adebiyi gave the advice during a Thanksgiving ceremony held at the church on Sunday in Lagos, to celebrate FRSC’s 30th anniversary.

According to him, there should be more safety education and enlightenment for motorists so that the objectives of the corps can be actualised.

“Jesus Christ commissioned the disciples to teach people ;we are the recipients of it today.

“And what does FRSC have to do? They need to teach people the rudiments of safety on highways to reduce carnage on the roads to the barest minimum by year 2020,’’ he said.

The cleric also advised motorists to abide by the traffic rules and regulations as stipulated in the word of God, that “we should obey the authority’’.

“If everybody should obey the law, there won’t be more crashes on the roads.

Also, people will be leaving in peace within the society,’’ Adebiyi said.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Sector Commander in Lagos State, thanked God for the successes recorded by the Corps in reducing crashes on the highways.

Omeje said that the corps was now working toward leveraging on highway technology to enforce and checkmate traffic offenders.

“ FRSC is celebrating its 30th anniversary today; it is about looking back from where we are coming from, where we are today and the future of the corps in terms of road safety.

“We all know that the rate of crashes in Nigeria was worrisome before the establishment of the FRSC.

“Since then, the corps has been working tirelessly to reduce carnage on the road to the barest minimum.

“Today we are living witnesses to the fact that the labour of our founding father, Prof. Wole Soyinka, is not really in vain,’’ he said.

Omeje said that the corps was looking forward to having a system that would be technology driven in performing its duties, rather than what was currently on ground.

According to him, technology will also be deployed to enforce the usage of speed limit device , as well use breathalyzers to detect drunk drivers on the highways.

“I advise motorists to always drive safely and obey traffic rules and regulations.

“Motorists should also shun dangerous driving, overloading and driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous substances,’’ the FRSC boss appealed.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defunct military government of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida established the FRSC in February 1988 through Decree No. 45 of 1988 as amended by Decree 35 of 1992.

It referred to it in the statute books as the FRSC Act cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN).

The body, which had Prof. Wole Soyinka as its first Chairman, was established to checkmate the level of recklessness and carnage on Nigerian roads. (NAN)

Lives: FRSC commends HEI for saving over 200 accident victims

Lagos, Dec. 10, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commended the Health Emergency Initiative (HEI) for giving prompt support and assistance to save the lives of over 200 accident victims in the last two years.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos State Sector Commander of FRSC, gave the commendation on Sunday during a “ Five-kilometre Walk, Carnival and Charity programme’’ organised by HEI in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that HEI is a non-profit making organization established to assist victims of road accidents by offsetting their hospital bills.

The walk was sponsored by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), an audit firm.

Omeje, who was represented by Mrs Ololade Mala, Sector Assistant Route Commander, FRSC, said that HEI saved many crash victims’ lives through prompt intervention and payment of hospital bills.

“The HEI, a non-profit organisation, has done so well in saving the lives of accident victims through its quick intervention to them at all times.

“An example is the recent crash at the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; the organisation helped to make some payments to the state hospitals where they had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

“This enabled the victims to receive prompt treatment to save their lives before their relatives were contacted.

“This is in sync with part of the 2017 Strategic Goals of FRSC; the goal to improve enforcement and post crash care by reducing traffic crash by 15 per cent and fatality by 25 per cent.

“The HEI has been doing tremendous work to ensure that the lives of indigent and vulnerable victims are not lost as a result of road crashes,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Mr Paschal Achunine, the Executive Director of HEI, said that the initiative was set up to support and revive critically injured accident victims.

“An accident injured victim is a vulnerable person no matter how rich, powerful or poor the individual may be.

“From October 2015 till date, we have assisted over 200 accident victims through the partnership between HEI, FRSC and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

“We don’t want a case where anybody will bleed to death as result of accident on the road.

“That is why we set up the health emergency initiative to assist accident victims by prompt payment of the bills at the general hospitals.

“ A lot of victims have died because of their inabilities to pay only N2,000 or N3,000 treatment fees.

“This should not be acceptable in a country where you see and read screaming headlines in newspapers that say billions on naira were going into private pockets; it is unfair,’’ Achunine said.

The director, however, appealed to other stakeholders to emulate the PWC by supporting the organisation.

According to him, this will hugely contribute to save the lives of many people from road accidents.

Also, Mrs Obioma Ubah of the Corporate Responsibility, Diversity and Inclusion, PWC, commended  HEI for the great job it was doing to save many accident victims’ lives.

“We have seen the sincerity in the organisation.

“That is why we pitched our tent with them, to give them the support they deserve,’’ Ubah said.(NAN)
