De Bruyne leads remarkable Manchester City comeback win against Real Madrid

Madrid, Feb. 27, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City pulled off a stunning late fightback to beat hosts Real Madrid 2-1 in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg fixture.

In the game which had Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos sent off, Kevin De Bruyne kept his cool to beat Belgium team mate Thibaut Courtois from the penalty kick spot.

His goal in the 82nd minute gave Manchester City the lead, after Gabriel Jesus had headed home a cross from De Bruyne to pull the visitors level in the 78th minute.

Isco had given Real Madrid the lead on the hour mark following a sweeping counter-attack, but the 13-times European champions’ night soon unraveled.

It culminated in Ramos being sent off for hauling down Jesus in a bid to prevent a third Manchester City goal.

Ramos will be suspended for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on March 17.

Manchester City, Chelsea share spoils in 3-3 WSL thriller

Manchester (UK), Feb. 23, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Leaders Manchester City and second-placed Chelsea shared the spoils in a pulsating 3-3 draw in an FA Women’s Super League (WSL) clash on Sunday which saw spectacular goals from six different scorers.

Manchester City stay top of the table with 40 points after 16 games, while Chelsea maintained their unbeaten record in the league.

They remain a point behind with a game in hand over their title rivals.

Ellen White gave Manchester City the lead in the 22nd minute with a close-range effort.

But midfielder So-Yun Ji put Chelsea level six minutes before the break with a deflected shot from distance.

Georgia Stanway put Manchester City back in front with a superb breakaway goal on the hour mark.

But, again, Chelsea came back as goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck could not keep out Magdalena Eriksson’s close-range header eight minutes later.

Stanway then had a penalty kick saved before Beth England’s long-distance pile-driver put Chelsea ahead for the first time.

This time it was Manchester City who dug deep to level as Hemp held off Maren Mjelde to score the final goal of a thrilling game and secure a valuable point.

At the other end of the table, Ebony Salmon’s goal 15 minutes from time gave Bristol City a 1-0 away win over Birmingham City.

The slim win moved them up to 10th in the table.

Manchester United scored an impressive 3-2 win away to Everton.

A Rianna Dean penalty kick gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, who had Lea Le Garrec sent off in the first half for two yellow cards.

In Sunday’s late kick-off fixture, West Ham’s Adriana Leon and Martha Thomas and Liverpool’s Rachel Furness each netted a brace of goals.

Manchester City see off West Ham United as fans take aim at UEFA

Manchester (UK), Feb. 19, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City showed no signs of letting their off-field problems distract them as they comfortably beat relegation-threatened West Ham United 2-0 in their re-arranged English Premier League (EPL) game on Wednesday.

Manchester City took the lead on the half hour from a well-worked corner kick routine, Rodri rising to meet Kevin De Bruyne delivery with a superbly-angled header at the near-post.

De Bruyne doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, squeezing in a right foot shot at Lukasz Fabianski’s near-post after a swift exchange with Bernardo Silva.

UEFA handed Manchester City a two-year ban from European football on Friday for serious breaches of their Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Premier League champions deny the charges and are appealing against the decision.

While manager Pep Guardiola deflected pre-game television questions about the issue, Manchester City fans had no such reticence.

They shouted chants aimed at UEFA, including one which ended with “we will see you in court”.

Manchester City are second in the league but are 22 points behind leaders Liverpool while West Ham remained in 18th position, deep in the relegation battle.

Klopp sympathises with Guardiola after Manchester City’s European ban

Norwich (UK), Feb. 16, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said he had sympathy for his Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola in the wake of the English champions’ two-year ban from European football.

The ban was dished out by UEFA for the club’s alleged breaching of Financial Fair Play rules.

Manchester City’s domestic title challenge are all but over, with Liverpool 25 points ahead after beating Norwich City 1-0 away on Saturday.

But Klopp said the news on Friday about the European ban for the Manchester club had taken him by surprise.

“It was a shock. Complete wow!” he said. “The only thing I can say is about football. What they have done on the football pitch is exceptional. The rest, I don’t know.

“I really feel for them, Pep and the players, but that is how it is. They can appeal. So, we will see what happens then. It is obviously serious.

“But the football they played was exceptional and will always be exceptional.”

European football’s governing body UEFA said Manchester City had committed “serious breaches” of its FFP regulations.

This was by “overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016.”

PSG replace Manchester City as most financially-powerful club, report says

London, Feb. 14, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) French champions Paris St-Germain (PSG) have overtaken Manchester City as the most financially-powerful club in world football, the annual Soccerex Football Finance 100 report has showed.

PSG topped the 2020 edition with a football finance index score of 5.318.

This is based on the value of the current squad, tangible assets, finance available in their accounts, potential owner investment and net debt.

The study said PSG had reduced their debt by 70 million euros (£58.2 million) over the last year while Manchester City’s debt levels had increased by more than 90 million euros.

Bayern Munich came third with Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid completing the top five.

Manchester United fell eight places from last year to 16th in the report, mainly due to the depreciation in squad value and an increase in cash debt.

Europe’s elite sides accounted for 80 per cent of the top 30 but almost half of those clubs are owned by non-European entities.

These include organisations and individuals from the Middle East, North America and South-east Asia, the report said.

“This year’s report paints a positive picture of football’s collective financial health, but it also highlights the growing imbalance between the power of Europe’s modern elite, with some of the game’s heritage brands in danger of being left behind,” Philip Gegan, Soccerex managing director, said.

“In spite of Europe’s dominance, football is very much a global game with investment from football’s emerging markets very much underpinning its continued growth.”

The English Premier League (EPL) is represented by 18 clubs in the top 100, while the U.S. Major League Soccer (MLS) was the next best with 17.

Manchester City close gap on Liverpool after blitzing Aston Villa

Manchester (UK), Oct. 26, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Three second-half goals ensured Manchester City climbed back into second place behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League after a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

City struggled to get going in the first half, with Villa having several chances to break the deadlock in the pouring Manchester rain.

However, the home side wasted no time after regrouping at the interval as Raheem Sterling latched on to a Gabriel Jesus flick before firing City in front 20 seconds into the second half.

It was the England international’s 13th goal of the season.

Jesus then almost grabbed a quick-fire second but Tyrone Mings cleared off the line, before David Silva found the net in the 65th minute, getting the faintest of touches to a Kevin De Bruyne cross.

Five minutes later Ilkay Gundogan made sure of another three points for City after he reacted first to a blocked shot to scissor-kick his strike into the net.

The result sees City climb back above Leicester City — after their record-equalling 9-0 victory at Southampton on Friday — with 22 points.

Liverpool, who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, have 25.

The win, however, was tarnished by a late red card for Fernandinho.

“If we play like we did in the first half for the rest of the season we will be in the relegation places,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.

“After the first half we corrected something; sometimes it happens but the second half was good.”

Looking to avoid a second successive home league defeat, Guardiola made five changes from the City side that beat Atalanta in the Champions League in midweek.

Jesus was handed his first home start of the season up front.

The Brazilian had the game’s first chance in sodden conditions but fizzed an effort just wide.

Villa grew into the match and almost took the lead in the 23rd minute with City goalkeeper Ederson making an excellent double save.

City struggled to hit top gear but they should have gone into the interval in front after David Silva could only drag his effort wide from a good position.

Whatever Guardiola said at halftime had an immediate effect, though, as Sterling pounced to give City the lead. Jesus beat Mings in the air to set up Sterling, who cut on to his right foot before firing home.

“City’s first goal is just a lump from the goalkeeper,” Villa manager Dean Smith said.
“Tyrone Mings should do better and he knows that… a top player like Raheem Sterling puts it on the back of the net.”

David Silva celebrated as though he had got a touch to De Bruyne’s cross for City’s second.

But the goal was initially awarded to the Belgian after a long VAR check for a potential offside against Sterling.

A Premier League review after the match decided that David Silva was the correct scorer, adding to Villa’s frustration over the VAR offside check.

Gundogan soon had the result wrapped up for City after Bernardo Silva’s initial effort had been blocked.

Fernandinho’s late red card for two bookings gives Guardiola a headache with the Brazilian’s pending suspension set to leave City short at the back.

Super subs give Manchester City 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb

Manchester (UK), Oct. 2, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City made it two wins out of two in the UEFA Champions League Group C on Tuesday.

This was after goals from substitutes Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden gave Pep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb.

It was a game that could easily have ended in frustration, with Dinamo defending deep and effectively, but it turned on the introduction of England international Sterling in the 56th minute.

The Croatians frustrated the Premier League champions with some excellent defending in the first half.

All Manchester City could manage from their domination was Ilkay Gundogan’s shot against the bar in the 21st minute.

This was after an earlier effort from Sergio Aguero had been well dealt with by Dinamo goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

David Silva screwed a shot wide after the ball fell to him inside the area.

But Manchester City did not create enough from the amount of possession they enjoyed.

Guardiola’s side attacked almost exclusively down the left, where full-back Benjamin Mendy was allowed plenty of space.

But it was either the delivery into the box let them down or the Dinamo defence stood firm.

Riyad Mahrez on the right flank saw too little of the ball and Manchester City failed to really use the full width of the field.

They were too often getting involved in “five-a-side” contests on the edge of the box.

The introduction of Sterling increased the tempo and width of Manchester City’s play and it was the England international who broke the deadlock in the 66th minute.

He turned in a low cross from Riyad Mahrez after a superb diagonal pass from Rodri.

Dinamo tried their luck in the final stages but were caught on the counter.

In stoppage time Sterling broke and slipped the ball wide to Foden who confidently drove home.

Manchester City move on to six points from their opening two games after winning their first match 3-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk, while Dinamo have three points.

“They defended so well, even the goal from Raheem the defender was there.

“I didn’t expect them to play so deep, they only shot on target at set-pieces, but they did what they did so well,” said Guardiola, who praised Sterling for his improved finishing.

“He’s a player who is always there, he has this talent he loves to score goals, you always have that feeling.

“We had chances but they defended really well and that’s why it was difficult to score a goal,” he said.

“I think still he can improve his finishing. Today the pass for Phil was perfect.

“Still, there is a gap to be even more clinical. But it’s important that all the time he’s there and that’s why he’s been able to score the goals,” Sterling said.

Foden’s instant impact, with his goal coming four minutes after he came on, left Guardiola feeling sorry that he was unable to find more minutes for the talented 19-year-old.

“I know, he deserves to play, I want to give him minutes, I’m unfair to him. I’m sorry but he has (Kevin) De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Rodri (ahead of him).

“I know the best way is for him to play minutes but he’s so young.

“I don’t know many players of his age (who) have played so many minutes. He’s going to be incredible in the future but it is what it is.”(Reuters/NAN)

Jesus, Mahrez, Sterling score as Manchester City overcome Everton

Liverpool (UK), Sept. 28, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling were on target as champions Manchester City won 3-1 at Everton on Saturday to stay five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Everton lost winger Theo Walcott in the opening minutes after he was struck in the face by a Sterling cross and had to be taken to hospital for checks.

After Ilkay Gundogan had hit the bar for City, Pep Guardiola’s side grabbed a 24th-minute lead when Brazilian Jesus stooped at the back post to head in a Kevin De Bruyne cross.

A determined Everton got back on level terms, though, nine minutes later, when after poor clearance from Fernandinho, Seamus Coleman lofted the ball goalwards.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then dived to make sure with a header on the line.

There were chances for both teams before City got back in front with a low free kick into the far corner from Mahrez after Yerry Mina had brought down De Bruyne.

Sterling made sure of the three points, blasting home off the underside of the bar after a low cross from substitute Sergio Aguero was deflected out off the foot of Everton keeper Jordan Pickford. (Reuters/NAN)

Bernardo Silva gets hat-trick as Manchester City whip Watford 8-0

Manchester (UK), Sept. 21, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A Bernardo Silva hat-trick helped Manchester City to secure the joint second biggest English Premier League (EPL) victory in history on Saturday.

They thrashed a bewildered Watford 8-0 at the Etihad Stadium, in an immediate response to their first league defeat since January at Norwich City last weekend.

They blew Watford away by becoming the first side to score five goals in the first 18 minutes of a Premier League game.

David Silva got Manchester City up and running after finishing off a delightful pass from Kevin De Bruyne in the first minute.

Sergio Aguero’s 100th Premier League goal doubled the hosts’ advantage from the penalty kick spot thereafter.

Riyad Mahrez curled a brilliant free kick into the net in the 12th minute, with a Bernardo Silva header and a Nicolas Otamendi tap-in completing the 18-minute rout.

Watford brought on an extra defender just after the half-hour mark to try to stem the tide, seeing themselves through to half-time without further damage.

Bernardo Silva added a sixth goal three minutes into the second period.

He completed his first top-flight hat-trick with a close-range finish to make it seven.

Pukki shines as Norwich City stun Manchester City 3-2 at Carrow Road

Norwich (UK), Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) An injury-ravaged Norwich City outclassed champions Manchester City 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday with striker Teemu Pukki scoring one and setting up another for a famous win at Carrow Road.

Eleven players were sidelined for Norwich, with many suffering injuries during the international break, but that did not stop the promoted side from handing Pep Guardiola’s men their first loss of the season.

Norwich took the lead in the 18th minute from a corner floated in towards the near post which was headed home by Kenny McLean for his first ever Premier League goal.

They doubled the lead from a counter-attack when Pukki carried the ball forward and attracted the attention of City defender Kyle Walker and Ederson before teeing up an unmarked Todd Cantwell.

Sergio Aguero halved the lead at the stroke of halftime when he found space between the two centre backs and nodded home Bernardo Silva’s cross.
The Argentinian thus maintained his run of scoring in every league game so far this season.

Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi gifted Norwich a third when he dallied on the ball and allowed Emi Buendia to steal in and take it off him to set up Pukki for his sixth goal of the season.

The error left manager Guardiola fuming on the bench.
