Aguero strikes again as Manchester City win at Bournemouth

Bournemouth (UK), Aug. 25, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero struck twice as Manchester City moved into second place in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool, with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Aguero, who has scored in all three games this season, gave City a 15th-minute lead.

The striker slotted home after left back Oleksandr Zinchenko’s low cross had been mis-hit by Kevin De Bruyne only to fall kindly for the Argentine.

Adam Smith then missed a great chance to level for the Cherries, firing high over the bar from a good position after some poor defending from Nicolas Otamendi.

Moments later Raheem Sterling doubled City’s lead with a confident finish after David Silva concluded a sweeping move with a perfectly angled pass to the England striker.

But Bournemouth got back into the game in magnificent fashion, just before the interval, thanks to an unstoppable curling free-kick from substitute Harry Wilson, on loan from Liverpool.

Wilson went close to a leveller after the interval but Ederson was out quickly to foil his effort.

City then made sure of the win when Aguero poked home his second goal in the 63rd minute, following in for the scraps after David Silva had surged into the box. (Reuters/NAN)

Manchester City beat Liverpool on penalty kicks to win Community Shield

London, Aug. 4, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City struck an early blow for the forthcoming English Premier League campaign as they beat Liverpool on penalty kicks to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

They won 5-4, but it was after an absorbing contest which had finished 1-1 following 90 minutes of play.

Former Liverpool player Raheem Sterling gave the champions the lead in a first half they dominated as Liverpool’s sluggish pre-season form continued.

European champions Liverpool were far better in the second period.

They equalised through Joel Matip’s header and created a host of other chances to take the lead as Manchester City appeared to tire.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker made a last-ditch goal line clearance from Mo Salah’s effort in the dying moments.

With no extra time being played, the showpiece went to a penalty kicks shootout.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who completed the domestic treble last season, claimed the silverware in the traditional curtain-raiser.

They converted all five of their penalty kicks in ruthless fashion, while Georginio Wijnaldum had his effort saved by Claudio Bravo.(Reuters/NAN)

English FA Cup: Manchester City crush Watford 6-0 to complete treble in style

London, May 18, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City crushed Watford 6-0 in the English FA Cup final match on Saturday at Wembley.

They have now become the first team to win the English treble of league championship and both domestic cups in spectacular style.

The victory matched the competition’s record final win —- set when Bury beat Derby County 116 years ago.

Also, it was a fair reflection of yet another command performance by one of the best teams in the history of the English game.

This has come after they retained the English Premier League (EPL) title last week and won the League Cup earlier in a penalty kicks shootout over Chelsea.

Manchester City’s sixth FA Cup triumph made them the eighth team to win the prized League and FA Cup double and first since Chelsea in 2010.

“It was an incredible final for us and we have finished an incredible year,” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said.

“To all the people at the club, a big congratulations, especially the players because they are the reason why we have won these titles.”

Manchester City led 2-0 at half-time through David Silva and Sterling.

They effectively sealed the win when Kevin de Bruyne came off the bench to smash in the third after 61 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus slotted the fourth before Sterling, who was brought up in Wembley, took centre stage with two more in the last 10 minutes.

He thus became the first player to score an FA Cup final hat-trick since Stan Mortensen in 1953 when Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 in the “Matthews Final”.

“I grew up here and saw this stadium get built. It’s a massive dream come true to win trophies here,” Sterling said.

“It shows what the manager is building here. He said we needed to get the mentality right and we did that and did it exceptionally well.

“It’s been a long season with the World Cup as well, but everyone has been on their A-game and come through.”

Other than one early chance for Roberto Pereyra, Watford never looked remotely capable of ending their 30-year winless run against Manchester City.

Burnley (England), April 28, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero was on target as Manchester City restored their one-point lead at the top of the English Premier League with a nervous and scrappy 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side now need to win their final games at home to Leicester City and away to Brighton and Hove Albion to retain the title and deny second-placed Liverpool.

City got the breakthrough in the 63rd minute with an uncharacteristically scrappy goal.

Aguero’s shot was chested out and cleared by Matt Lowton on the goalline but technology ruled the effort had crossed.

City struggled to get into their usual rhythm in the first half but came out strongly after the break.

Burnley keeper Tom Heaton did well to keep out a fierce blast from Sergio Aguero at the near post.

Burnley were fortunate to escape a penalty appeal when a drive from Bernardo Silva appeared to strike the arm of Burnley’s Ashley Barnes.

Heaton did well to keep out another fierce drive, this time from Bernardo Silva, before City finally took the lead.

Raheem Sterling went close to a second but Burnley defender Ben Mee produced a wonderful goalline clearance to keep the Clarets in the game.

Manchester City take big step towards title with derby win at United

Manchester (UK), April 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City took a big step towards retaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The win sent the Cityzens back to the top of the table.

City have 89 points, one more than rivals Liverpool, with both teams having three games to play.

Second half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane ensured a comfortable win for City against a United side that remain in sixth place, outside the Champions League qualification slots.

United, smarting from their 4-0 hammering at Everton on Sunday, played with aggression and energy in the scoreless first half but the game was put beyond them after the break.

Bernardo Silva picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside, surprising United keeper David De Gea with a low drive that sneaked in the bottom corner in the 54th minute.

Twelve minutes later and City doubled their lead.

Guardiola vows Manchester City will ‘stand up’ in title race after ‘cruel’ exit

Manchester (UK), April 18, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that his team would “stand up” and fight for the Premier League title after their dreams of a quadruple were ended by Wednesday’s dramatic exit from the Champions League.

City went out on the away goals rule after their 4-3 win at the Etihad Stadium left the two legged quarter-final standing at 4-4 on aggregate.

Guardiola’s side thought a late goal from Raheem Sterling had earned them a place in the semi-finals but the effort was ruled.

A VAR review confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

“It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it,” said Guardiola.

“After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed.

“Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals,” said the Spaniard.

City were also eliminated by English opponents, Liverpool, in the quarter-finals last season.

Guardiola said he continued to back the use of VAR, which also allowed Fernando Llorente’s decisive goal for Spurs despite suspicions of handball.

But he questioned the decision reached over Llorente’s goal – which officials concluded had rolled off the Spaniard’s hip and into the net in the wild encounter at the Etihad.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not,” he said.

A packed stadium had roared City on in the second half with a thundering strike from Aguero 59th minute seeming to send Guardiola’s side on their way to the last four.

“I am so proud of the players and the fans,” said Guardiola.

“I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester but football is unpredictable.”

City host Spurs again on Saturday in the Premier League as they battle with Liverpool for top spot having seen their dream of a quadruple end.

Having won the Carabao Cup (League Cup), City are in the FA Cup final and are two points behind Liverpool, with a game in hand, in the league.

“We have to stand up and react. It is a close (short amount of) time and the same team. We can’t think too much now.

“We have to try to sleep as much as possible and the day before the game we are going to prepare for the game,” he said.

“We have fought for nine or 10 months in the Premier League and still we are there. It is in our hands.

2018/2019 UCL: Tottenham Hotspur stun Manchester City to advance after 7-goal thriller

Manchester (UK), April 17, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-4 on Wednesday but reached the semi-finals of the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate score against Manchester City.

Spurs, who won the first leg 1-0, will now face Ajax Amsterdam of Holland for a place in the final match against Liverpool or FC Barcelona.

In a dramatic finale to an astonishing contest, Manchester City had a stoppage time goal from Raheem Sterling, which would have sent them through, ruled out for offside.

VAR review confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

In a breathtaking quarter-final second leg game in Manchester, City took a fourth minute lead through a beautiful curling shot from Sterling.

But Spurs struck back with two quick goals from Son Heung-min — the second of them a magnificent finish.

The manic opening period continued when Bernardo Silva brought the home side level in the 11th minute with a deflected shot.

Then, Sterling struck again to make it 3-2 in the 21st minute.

However, while a thundering strike from Aguero in the 59th minute put Manchester City in the driving seat again, they were again stunned in the 73rd minute.

Sterling double helps Manchester City beat Palace, top table

London, April 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling struck twice as the Premier League champions beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

The victory took City on top of the table and heap pressure on title rivals Liverpool.

Victory left City on 83 points from 33 matches, one point above Liverpool although the Merseyside club can leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s team with a win over third-placed Chelsea on Sunday.

The victory was the ninth straight win for City in the Premier League.

Having missed an easy chance early on, Sterling put City ahead in the 15th minute when he ran on to Kevin De Bruyne’s inch-perfect pass from behind the halfway line.

The England international added a second for his 17th league goal of the season after the break.

He met Leroy Sane’s first-time cross into the box with a calm left-footed finish that wrong-footed Guaita as it rolled in.

Palace ensured an entertaining finish to the contest when Luka Milivojevic scored from a free kick with nine minutes to go after midfielder James McArthur was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.

City, however, sealed the deal with their third of the match as De Bruyne latched on to a poor pass from defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

He then fed substitute Gabriel Jesus who finished emphatically.

“We controlled the ball really well but one moment in the game and they are back in it.

“But we responded again and got the third goal,” said Sterling, who added his belief that the title race will go down to the wire.

“100 percent the way Liverpool have been playing. It will go down to the wire. I don’t see us slowing down now.
“Liverpool have a great squad, great self-belief, but so do we,” said the former Liverpool forward.

Pep Guardiola’s side now face a crucial ten days starting with a home game against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday in their Champions League quarter-final second leg match.

They trail 0-1 from the opening game.

Son’s late winner gives Tottenham Champions League edge over Manchester City

London, April 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min’s late goal sealed a 1-0 home victory against Manchester City in an absorbing Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

With Spurs talisman Harry Kane having hobbled off injured and favourites City beginning to turn the screw, Son sent the home fans inside the London club’s majestic new stadium into delirium.

The South Koreasn fired past Ederson in the 78th minute.

Quadruple-chasing City, beaten at the same stage last year by Liverpool, were not at their slick best.
To make matters worse, SergioAguero’s first-half penalty miss proved costly.

The Argentine’s spot kick was superbly saved by Hugo Lloris after VAR adjudged defender Danny Rose to have handled.

Tottenham showed great discipline to preserve their lead and will now go to The Etihad next Wednesday with their hopes of a first Champions League semi-final appearance intact. (Reuters/NAN)

Manchester City go top again with 2-0 win over misfiring Fulham

London, March 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Top-class goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

City’s seventh successive league victory keeps alive their hopes an unprecedented quadruple of League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season.

A wayward ball from Fulham’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah gifted the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.

Sergio Aguero intercepted the Dutchman’s pass just outside the area and passed to Silva, who cut across past two defenders and drove his left-footed shot into the corner past the diving Sergio Rico in goal.

Fulham, playing without top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic after the international break, kept five men in the back line in a bid to keep City’s attack at bay.
The formation led to one-way traffic and in the end, the Cottagers were unable to register a single shot on target all game.

Silva turned provider in the 27th minute, pouncing onto a loose ball and passing to Aguero, who sprang forward past three defenders and shot from a tight angle up into the opposite corner.

It was Aguero’s league-leading 19th goal of the season.

The win takes City back to the top of the Premier League on 77 points, one ahead of Liverpool who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Fulham remain in 19th place on 17 points, and will now most likely need to win every one of their remaining six matches to have a chance of avoiding relegation. (Reuters/NAN)
