Hosts MFM FC beat Abia Warriors to end unhappy run

Lagos, March 18, 2020 (NAN) MFM Football Club of Lagos on Wednesday ended their five-game nightmare of enduring a drought of goals and wins by beating visiting Abia Warriors of Umuahia 2-1.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture saw the hosts securing a much-needed victory to steer them away from the relegation zone.

MFM FC started on full throttle in front of agitated fans at the Agege Stadium, and it paid off with a 18th minute clever finish from Dennis Obasi.

Clement Ogwu’s well-taken free-kick in the 29th minute gave the home side a two-goal lead to end the first half on a high in the Match Day 25 fixture.

They however let their guards down during the second half to concede a goal, after goalkeeper Teslim Folarin failed to parry Fatai Abdulahi’s flicked pass.

The hosts were however able to ward off further threats from Abia Warriors to end the game at 2-1.

MFM FC’s coach Tony Bolus, in an interview after the match, said victory was a much-expected win for the team after a five-game winless run.

“Definitely, we are going to key into winning this game for more victories for the team. We have seen some lapses from our strikers which we will work upon.

“We put everything into the game in the first half to achieve our aim,” he said.

Abia Warriors’ coach, Willy Udube, however lambasted his strikers, saying they played to the gallery in order to impress the home fans.

“My strikers were just playing to the gallery because they wanted to impress the home fans. This was because one of them is from Lagos.

“We lost lots of goal scoring chances due to this,” he said.

NAN reports that the last game MFM FC won was on Feb. 9 in a 3-1 win over Kano Pillars on Match Day 20 at the Agege Stadium.

They lost away to Kano Pillars 1-0, then drew 0-0 against visiting Heartland of Owerri, and they lost away to FC IfeanyiUbah.

The winless streak continued with a 0-0 home draw against Rangers International FC, before they suffered an away loss to Warri Wolves.(NAN)

NPFL: Warri Wolves whip visiting MFM FC

Warri (Delta), March 16, 2020 (NAN) Warri Wolves Football Club on Sunday beat the MFM FC of Lagos 2-0 at the Warri City Stadium in a Match Day 24 fixture of the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Substitute Okoyoh Michael put the hosts ahead in the 89th minute, while Charles Atshemene scored the second goal in the first minute of added time.
A combination between Goodluck Onamado and Abu Azeez almost earned Warri Wolves the first goal in the 8th minute but the final effort was deflected by the MFM FC goalkeeper.
At the resumption of the second half, both sides changed their tactical approach to the game.
Bala Akintunde of MFM FC was issued a red card for unprofessional misconduct in the 52nd minute and that changed the game plan for the visitors.
While Warri Wolves made three substitutions, MFM FC made two in the second half.
At the post-match interview, the coach of Warri Wolves, Evans Ogenyi, commended the performance of his players.
“Our opponents came with dull defensive tactics. When we played against them in the first stanza, we ran away with a win.
“I know they will now come with anger and I told my boys to expect a difficult match.
“We created about four chances in the first half, but they were wasted because of anxiety.
“In the dressing room, we said there was the need to up our game, be patient and take our chances, especially in the attack.
“On the whole, my boys did not play to their full potential today.
“But the important thing is that we got the three maximum points because we took the two chances that came our way,” he said.
The coach said he would now approach their mid-week match against Rivers United with every seriousness.
One of the day’s scorers, Michael said he dedicated the goal to the late Chineme Martins who slumped and died on the pitch on March 8.(NAN)

NPFL: Kano Pillars struggle to slim win over MFM FC

Kano, Feb. 16, 2020 (NAN)‎ Kano Pillars Football Club beat visiting MFM FC of Lagos 1-0 on Sunday in a Match Day 20 fixture of the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).‎

The match which was played at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano saw the Pillars needing to shrug off the weariness of the previous weekend’s 1-3 defeat to MFM FC in Lagos.

And they were quick to it as they went in front after 23 minutes through Usman Babalolo.‎

MFM FC braced up to the challenge and task, attacking the home side after the break, only to be foiled by the backline of Kano Pillars.

Kano Pillars then only needed to ward off all attempts by MFM FC to equalise as they held on to win the game.

Coach Ibrahim Musa later told newsmen that his team played well, describing it as a good performance.‎

Musa  said the result was good for the team after losing the away game 3-1.‎

“My team will continue to improve and work for victories against Rangers International and Rivers United on Wednesday and Sunday respectively,’’ he said.‎

Kano Pillars now have 27 points and occupy the eighth  position on the competition’s table.‎‎(NAN)

NPFL Match Day 19: MFM FC held at home again

Lagos, May 12, 2019 (NAN) Lagos-based MFM Football Club on Sunday drew 1-1 against less-fancied Remo Stars FC in a Match Day 19 fixture of the 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Group A.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hosts came from behind after a shot from Elijah Akanni had created a goalmouth scramble in the 60th minute.

Remo Stars FC had drawn the first blood in the 23rd minute through Victor Chidume.

The draw was the third home draw by MFM FC this season.

This had started with Enyimba FC, a game they drew 1-1 on Match Day 14.

They then recorded a 0-0 draw against the Lobi Stars.

It was the first time Remo Stars FC were picking a point at the Agege Stadium, after five meeting between both teams.

A distraught MFM FC Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, however refused to say much at the end of the match, though he did say the game was not what he expected.

“I cannot comment on the match because this is not what I expected, he said.

Remo Stars FC’s goalscorer Chidume, on his part, said he was extremely happy to have scored against the team he has much respect for.

“I am extremely happy to score the goal, though they came back to draw level. I respect the team so much because of their pedigree in the league.

“It wasn’t a bad result for us. At least we were able to secure a point. Because nobody gave us a chance,” he said.(NAN)

NPFL: Kwara United in slim win over group leaders MFM FC

Ilorin, April 8, 2019 (NAN) A 54th minute own goal by Olawale Abisoye on Sunday gave hosts Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin a 1-0 win over visiting MFM FC of Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win was in a Group A Match Day 14 fixture of the 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Abisoye scored against his team in an attempt to clear his line after Kwara United’s Shamsuden Hashim had ran clear of the visitors’ defenceline

Kwara United would have been ahead in the third minute of play when Uwana Asuquo was afforded much time and space to unleash a right-footed effort which went close.

The hosts dominated the early proceedings, but could have equally found themselves behind as goalkeeper Olawale Oremade dropped a cross under no pressure.

But Temim Adebayo could not score from six yards, to the relief of many at the Kwara Stadium Complex in Ilorin.

At the other end, Lookman Binuyo’s corner kick was met by Sunday Akinmoladun whose header was comfortably gathered by Olatunji Odekunle with half an hour gone.

Both sides came close to finding the back of the net in the closing stages of the first half.

Ernest Chidiebere got at the end of a throw-in, but saw his attempt cleared before MFM FC’s Michael Ohanu tame effort was saved by goalkeeper Oremade.

Kwara United nearly doubled the lead, when Binuyo once again was the architect of a move down the left wing.

His pullout was volleyed towards goal by Uche Onwuasonaya with Olatunji beaten, but Jonathan Zikiye was on hand to clear.

MFM FC nearly got an equaliser with fifteen minutes to go, when Akuneto Chijioke connected Zikiye’s throw-in but Chinedu Nwanze cleared his line.

The hosts kept their nerves during the closing stages of the game to hang on to the maximum three points.

MFM FC’s coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who conceded defeat in his reactions to the result, said he was happy with his players’ performance.

“The better side won. They are very strong at home. We came here with a game plan to at least pick a point, but our performance wasn’t bad” Ilechukwu said.(NAN)

MFM FC survive Enyimba FC scare for 1-1 draw

Lagos, March 31, 2019 (NAN) Lagos-based MFM Football Club on Sunday rallied back for a 1-1 draw to preserve their unbeaten home record against visiting Enyimba International FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Match Day 13 fixture at the Agege Stadium saw the Aba-based Enyimba opening scores through Bashir Abdulrahman in the 49th minute.

The Olukoya boys, however, responded almost immediately, through a brilliant strike from Chijioke Akuneto in the 56th minut.

The home team later claimed they were denied two penalty kicks, in the first half and the last minute of the game.

MFM FC’s coach Fidelis Ilechukwu urged the League Management Company (LMC) to take action against the match officials.

“To me, this is unexpected in the league. Enyimba International FC should stop complaining about other clubs. That is how they complained in Benin (against Bendel Insurance FC) and they have been complaining about the NPFL.

“Enyimba are guilty of what they are complaining about, regarding other clubs. I will want LMC to look into this  because we had two clear-cut penalty kicks which were denied us.

“After so much hardwork, it is painful. Maybe, we don’t always want to talk, but this match makes me sad. This type of officiating is not the first, second or third time.

“It is not our own failure that we did not beat them, but a failure on their part. Enyimba should have opened up the game so that we can have a good game,” he said.(NAN)

2018/2019 NPFL: Bendel Insurance beat visiting MFM FC 1-0

Benin, March 23, 2019 (NAN) Kingsley Onovo’s 18th minute goal from a set-piece on Saturday helped hosts Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin to a 1-0 win over the MFM FC of Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hosts’ victory was in a 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Group A match played at the University of Benin Sports Complex.

The win over the group leaders, who beat them 2-0 away last week, has now given Bendel Insurance their second win in the competition which got underway on Jan. 13.

Speaking with journalists after the match, Bendel Insurance FC’s Head Coach, Baldwin Bazuaye, commended his players for a job well done.

Bazuaye said the three points earned from the win would go a long way to boost his players’ winning mentality.

NAN reports that the match was a week 12 fixture, and signals the commencement of the league’s second round.

Bendel Insurance are now with 12 points from two wins and six draws in 11 matches, while MFM FC maintain their group leadership with 22 points from 12 matches.(NAN)

NPFL Match Day 8: MFM FC survive Niger Tornadoes’ scare to win 3-2

Lagos, Feb. 10, 2019 (NAN) Group A table-toppers MFM Football Club on Sunday survived a scare from visiting Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna to come back from a first half 0-2 deficit to then win 3-2.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win was in a Match Day 8 fixture in the abridged 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

It ensured the Lagos-based hosts maintained top spot for the third week running.

MFM FC trailed by two goals scored within the opening 10 minutes of play, through Peter Abashiya in the second minute and Jonathan Osondu in the 10th minute.

The hosts’ comeback began with a simple tap-in by Olawale Abisoye in the 45th minute after receiving a long throw from Jonathan Zikiye.

Michael Ohanu drew his side level in the 53rd minute, while the home team completed the comeback in the dying minutes of the tensed match.

Chucks Kenedinum received a long pass to beat an offside trap and score in the third minute of added time.

MFM FC’s coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, after the match, praised his team for their fighting spirit, adding that he did not put any pressure on the players during the half-time break.

“The players truly deserve praise for their efforts. While in the dressing room for the second half, I decided not to put pressure on them, I just told them to do the job.

“It does not matter to me anymore how we win, what we needed were the three points at stake because this game was important to us.

“However, when people said earlier that Niger Tornadoes are a weak side, I told them that it would make the game tougher, because they now have a new technical crew. Now, everybody can see what they did today.

“But I must commend our players today (Sunday), because they have made history being an entirely new set of players and still doing well.

“Others would have slipped down to the relegation zone. No team in the world can achieve that,” he said.(NAN)

Maximum points crucial in an abridged league, MFM FC coach says after slim win

Lagos, Feb. 3, 2019 (NAN) Fidelis Ilechukwu, the Chief Coach of Lagos-based MFM FC, on Sunday said getting the maximum points in any match in an abridged league was a priority ahead of playing eye-catching games.

Ilechukwu said after his team’s 1-0 defeat of visiting Wikki Tourists of Bauchi at the Agege Stadium in Lagos that the win was more important to him and his team.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, in the abridged 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Group A Match Day 6 fixture, only a 69th minute strike separated both sides.

Chijioke Akuneto’s tap-in after a Mohammad Said sublime pass gave the hosts the maximum points.

“We did not play well enough today. I think the players are a bit tired. Maybe it is as a result of our last training.

“But the maximum points are the most important thing for now, it doesn’t matter how we get the results.

“To be candid, playing abridged league is very tough. So, we need to make sure that we pick our points, because we can’t afford a slip.

“We played an entirely boring first half, but I have earlier informed one of the players that he will play.

“Though he is not tall, but he is fast. So, I told him to get the job done. So, when he made the assist, he came to me to thank me for the confidence,’’ Ilechukwu said.

The coach however said his team could only get better as the abridged league progresses, adding that his team needed some level of fitness.

“I am the youngest coach in Nigeria with the youngest team. So, we need experience as we progress in the league,” he said.(NAN)

MFM FC beat Rangers International 1-0

Lagos, Jan. 23, 2019 (NAN) A 25th minute tap-in by Kabir Adeniji made the difference as MFM Football Club of Lagos claimed the vital maximum points against visiting Rangers International FC of Enugu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Match Day 4 in the abridged 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) was played at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

In the match which was also witnessed by Super Eagles’ Chief Coach Gernot Rohr, Adeniji scored for the hosts in the 25th minute.

Rangers’ defender Tope Oluyemisi was also sent off in the 77th minute after two bookable offences.

Speaking after the match, MFM FC’s coach Fidelis Ilechukwu said his team deserved to win the match.

“We made so many changes to the team which played our last match. I won’t say that we are lucky to win because the game was tough.

“I think the team is gradually taking shape. The team is well motivated and we deserve to win. For today’s game the win is a morale-booster.

“The win is very important to us. Maybe when we play the return fixture, we will have an edge over them,” he said.

Rangers’ coach Gbenga Ogunbote however said his team lost the match due to carelessness on the part of the players.

“We lost to carelessness. I don’t like to give excuses, but the team was not careful enough during the game,” he said.(NAN)
