NYSC in Ogun trains 2,464 in entrepreneurship development

Sagamu (Ogun), Nov. 9, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun on Friday graduated 2,464 corps members from its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

The graduation was for the 2018 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members currently undergoing orientation.

It held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu, Ogun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the SAED programme, inaugurated by the NYSC Board in 2012, has graduated more than 20,000 trainees in Ogun.

The Ogun Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Josephine Bakare, tasked the graduates to distinguish themselves through optimal application of their skills for self-development.

“These ones have been exposed to several sub-skills under the 12 skill sectors of the SAED approved by the NYSC Directorate,’’ the coordinator said.

She said that the skills included fashion designing, landscaping, make-up artistry, bead/jewelry embroidery, cosmetology, catering, craftsmanship, food processing and information and communication technology.

“It is believed that within the next few months, some of those trained will begin to create wealth for themselves and become employers of labour.

“To achieve this, you must continuously develop yourselves with your trainers stationed across all local government areas within the state to master your skills.

“I also urge you to leverage the collaboration between the NYSC and partner financial institutions to access soft loans to grow your businesses,” she said.

Ogun Deputy Gov. Yetunde Onanuga urged the graduates to be disciplined and dedicated to enable them to achieve business excellence.

“You must take your own destiny in your own hands and look for how to make an impact by being a solution provider.

“Billionaires are solution providers and ones who have learnt to perfect their skills and trades overtime to the benefit of others.

“If you must excel in craftsmanship and enterprise, you must pay attention to quality,” Onanuga said.

She reiterated the commitment of the state government to supporting enterprise and innovation by engendering strategic investment in technical education.

Abuja, Oct. 23, 2018 ( NAN) Dr Biodun Ogungbo, a Neurological Surgeon, Brain and Spine Surgery Consortium (BASS), Abuja, has called for adequate training of health workers on patient’s right.
Ogungbo made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
“Some hospitals, doctors and nurses refuse to disclose the names of drugs or treatments to their patients for fear the patient will know what they are taking and then go off to buy it from an outside source.
“Some doctors also refuse to disclose details of operations performed, implants used or other critical details for whatever reason, best known to them.
“Patients, relatives, doctors and nurses should join the debate, especially if you are a healthcare practitioner and most especially, if you work in such an environment. You might even be one of the doctors or the owner of such a dreadful hospital,” he said.
Ogungbo said the right of patients are usually infringed more often in public hospitals, saying some will remove urinary catheters, cannulas, bandages on wounds from the patients before tossing them out.
He however said some other hospitals also sometimes physically force patients out of the hospital bed, once discharged and refuse to re-admit the patient.
“A few hospitals have in my experience, refused the use of their ambulances, to convey the patients to the nearest hospital or home, in a childish game of retribution,’’ the expert noted.
He said the most important person and the reason hospitals exist is the patient, saying that the man who ensures the bills are paid including the salaries of healthcare practitioners is the patient.
Ogungbo advised healthcare practitioners to have a change of attitude towards patients, adding that their job is to keep the patients alive and in good health.
“We cannot be nasty to the patients or perform acts that reduce their chances of survival, by not giving them the right information.
“So, if patients don’t come, you are a goner, once you get that, you realise that the attitude and behaviour of the practitioner is to ensure the wellbeing and longevity of the patient, dead patients do not pay the bills,” he said. (NAN)

Minna, Oct. 6, 2018 (NAN) The Niger Government has urged parents to monitor their teenage children against drug abuse in order to reduce crimes in the society.
The state Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Minna.
Madugu said that it was wrong and dangerous for parents to leave their children and wards’ surveillance solely to teachers and house helps.
She therefore advised parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children by knowing their friends and acquaintances.
“It is harmful for parents to allow any lad to be a friend to their children or ward; I say this because every child has different background, and they come along with different traits to school.
“This is why parents should monitor their children and wards by going as far as searching their school bags occasionally, and even their pockets, to know what content they have there,” she said.
She noted that peer group had a lot of negative and positive influences, urging parents to be mindful of such influences which could be harmful to them and the society at large.
“It is a necessity for parents to instill discipline of no to self medication to their children.
“Parents should not allow their children or wards take drugs indiscriminately; rather, they should be in the know of any medication,” she said.
The commissioner also called on parents to sharpen their thinking skills, to enable them understand promptly tact their children might exhibit to hide certain clandestine behaviours. (NAN)

Organisation trains 1,000 prison officials on human rights

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) An Abuja-based Prisons and Human Rights Group, Uchefem Consult, says that the organisation has trained not less than 1,000 prison officials on human rights protection in the last two years.
The Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Mr Uche Owete, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the ongoing five-day training organised for 30 police, prisons and judicial officers on the Administration of Criminal Justice (ACJA) on Wednesday in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Owete explained that the training was organised to effect serious and durable changes in the sector for the overall benefit of prison and justice systems.
He also said that the training was to bring together the police investigation and prosecution segment, the lower courts, particularly Magistrates, where the bulk of criminal cases are tried and the prisons where persons are held for a long time without trial.
“We developed the Human Rights training manual and Guide in 2015 for officials of Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS).
“We started the training in 2016 on human rights based on the manuals conducted for officials of NPS in all training institutions in Lagos, Enugu, Owerri, and Lagos and also the Prison Academy in Ijebu-Igbo.
“In 2017, same training was conducted at Zonal commands of NPS comprising of group of states such as Oyo, Rivers and Kaduna, among others.
“So far, almost 1,000 officials of NPS have benefited directly or indirectly from our training on human rights protection.
“Now in 2018, a combined training on the Administration of Criminal Justice (ACJA) and Human Rights for 30 police, prisons and judiciary in order to avoid human rights violation,’’ he said.
Owete added that the training is expected to increase the cross-sectorial coordination, competences and capacities of major criminal justice actors to effect serious and durable changes in the sector for the overall benefit of the Nigerian Prison Service and the justice system.
“Assured of shared responsibilities by these actors with a view of changing justice landscape and reduce human rights violations.
“Ensure police observance of human rights standards during interrogation, detention and trial would be reduced drastically and high light the major innovations in criminal administration in Nigeria, among others objectives,” Owete said.
He commended the Swiss Government through its embassy in Nigeria for its support and funding for the training.

Association set to educate Nigerian employees on occupational safety

Abuja, Sept. 21, 2018 (NAN) Occupational Safety and Health of Nigeria (OSHA Association), a Non-Profit International Organisation, says it will educate employees of public and private sector organisations on occupational safety, health, security and environment.
Dr Dalhatu Ahmed, the Regional President of the association, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
Ahmed said that the association which has a global commitment of promoting safety and saving lives would be organising a workshop on `Practical Steps to Fire Prevention and Control Techniques’.
“The workshop is part of our corporate social responsibility to ensure that employees in the public and private sectors learn new updates to ensure fire preventions at the work place.
“The Association has been certified by Federal Fire Service as an active supporter and partner in promotion of fire prevention in Nigeria and her effort in upholding safety of lives and properties.
“International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has also recognised the roles and achievements of OSHA Association as one of its key stakeholders,’’ he said.
Ahmed added that the workshop is scheduled to hold on Sept. 28, at the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Hall, Federal Secretariat, Abuja, at 9 a.m.
He said that the event would be declared opened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, as good will messages by the Permanent Secretary Service Welfare and other top officials would be taken. (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 12, 2018 (NAN) The Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for training of community leaders on Demographic Dividend (DD) to properly educate the populace on the agenda.
Abubakar made the appeal at a conference tagged “Harnessing DD for sustainable development in Nigeria: The role of Muslim religious leaders’’, by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Represented by the Emir of Shonga, Alhaji Haliru Yahaya, the Sultan explained that the capacity of community leaders must be built and empower them with the right information to disseminate to their subjects on DD.
He said that there was need to pass the right information to people in achieving DD or else would be difficult to attain.
“The engagement of community leaders is important and such leaders must be convinced in what the Demographic Dividend is all about.
“They must be empowered with the right information that DD programme is not meant to reduce the population of Islamic nations.
“When they are equipped with such right information, they will carry out sermons on Sundays and Fridays in ensuring the attainment of DD,” he said.
He stated that Islam encouraged having children, but it was a sin to have children that you could not cater for in terms of providing them with basic needs of life.
The sultan emphasised on the need to make concerted effort to ensure education, health and empowerment of women and young people were put in proper perspective in achieving DD in the country.
He urged religious leaders to preach to people to give birth to children they could cater for not children that would be thrown out on the street as “Almajiris”.
Abubakar noted that attention must also be paid to the reproductive health of women and well being of the young people.
“If there is a healthy family in every home, the country will be better for it,” he said.
The Sultan, who expressed happiness on the conference and selection of Imams and other religious leaders, pledged to support the achievement of DD in the country. (NAN)

UK Foundation trains 271 corps members on voter registration

Abuja, Sept. 7, 2018 (NAN) The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), a United Kingdom (UK) Non-Departmental public body dedicated to supporting democracy, has trained 271 NYSC corps members on Civic Voter Education.
The WFD Country Director, Mr Adebowale Olorunmola, said this at the one-day training on Friday in Abuja at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Kubwa, FCT,
Olrunmola said the training was part of the organisation’s “#OurVoteCountsNGProject”.
He said that the project was being carried out in partnership with the NYSC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Olorunmola said that the organisation was also being supported by the European Union-Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).
The country director said that the project involved the recruitment and training of corps members to carry out voter education dissemination through the Voters’ Education Community Development Service (CDS) Group set up by the WFD.
According to Olorunmola, the Voters’ Education CDS group was set up as a sub-group under the NYSC Education CDS group and is first of its kind in Nigeria.
“Youths are often engaged by politicians and political parties and used as foot soldiers, thugs, to snatch ballot boxes, intimidate opposition candidates or parties as opposed to encouraging them to conduct their civic right of participating in the electoral process.
“The project will therefore support democratic governance in Nigeria by using targeted peer to peer civic and voter education to encourage youth participation in the electoral process.
“Youth participation in the electoral process is very crucial and important hence, the project’s target is to increase their interest and commitment to the process.
`This project is being funded by EU-SDGN and will be implemented by WFD and INEC.
“In line with the objectives of EU-SDGN and WFD, the project will support sustainable democratic growth through citizen participation.
“It will also strengthen the various institutions capable of accountable governance, while the Voters’ Education CDS group will set the foundation for a more responsible, participatory and engaged youth who can later constitute members of parliament,” Olorunmola said.
The country director said that the project would be replicated in Osun and Imo states, respectively.
Mr Bello Ballama, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, noted that youths in Nigeria constitute 63 per cent of eligible voting population, urging them to join hands to ensure that their votes count.
Ballama described the NYSC as a programme centred on building national unity and supporting the development of skills among youths to enable them actualise their full potential.
The coordinator lauded EU-SDGN and WFD for identifying the potentials of youths and their resolve to help strengthen democracy in the country.
Established in 1992, WFD provides expertise to countries around the world on how to develop parliaments, political party structures and civil society organisations; the key institutions that make up a functioning democracy.

Nasarawa politician trains 100 youths in different skills

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Aug. 16, 2018 (NAN) Alhaji Bala Mulki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, has trained more than 100 youths in different skills.
He told newsmen in Keffi on Thursday that the gesture was to enable the youths become self reliant and contribute their quota to national development.
Mulki, who is the Chairman, Dan Mulki Global Investment Nigeria Ltd, promised to empower more women, youths and the entire people of Keffi East constituency with skills to make them self reliant.
“I trained over 100 youths in different skills such as computer engineering and car wash business, among others, as some of them are on their own now while some are working in my organisation,’’ he said.
According to him, he would promote the welfare of the people of the constituency if elected to represent them at the state house of assembly in the 2019 general elections.
“As a businessman and a politician, I know how best to better the standard of living of my constituency, if elected.
“I will sponsor bills that have direct bearing on the lives of my people and the state at large.
“I will empower my people with skills as well as I will also give attention to agriculture by providing farm inputs to my people considering the importance of agriculture to national development,’’ he said.
Mulki, who is also the Chairman, Car Dealers Association, Keffi branch, renewed his aspiration to represent the area on the platform of APC.
“I did not step down for anybody, people should disregard such rumour. I am still in the race and by God’s grace I will win my primary election as well as the general election come 2019 in order to provide the much needed dividend of democracy to my people,” he said.
He called Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC in order to elect leaders of their choice.
The businessman drummed support for President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Tanko Al-Makura to enable them succeed in delivering more dividends of democracy.
Besides, Mulki called on Nigerians to shun violence, live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation to foster national development. (NAN)

ICIR to partner NAN to train journalists on investigative reporting

Abuja, Aug. 15, 2018 (NAN) The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) on Wednesday requested partnership with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to train its journalists on investigative reporting.

Mr Dayo Aiyetan, the Executive Director of the centre, made the request during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of NAN, Mr Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja.

Aiyetan said ICIR was ready to collaborate with NAN to develop its journalists to acquire the necessary skills for investigative reporting.

He said that the training would also help journalists to improve on the reportage of critical issues since the role of the media is to hold government accountable.

He said that his organisation was being funded by donor agencies and that the programmes included building the capacity of journalists, internships, mentoring as well as provision of grants.

According to him, the organisation’s funds were tied to specific projects such as investigating budget and procurement processes and human rights issues, among others.

Aiyetan said that ICIR was interested in training as many journalists as possible in order to improve their skills to be able to deliver on their statutory mandate.

“Because NAN is a government-owned media does not mean they cannot participate in investigative journalism.

“The organisation complements the work of anti-corruption agencies and we are standing with government to expose illegal activities.

“We want to train the staff to show our support for the media as well to share our contents,” he said.

Responding, Onanuga said that NAN management would welcome meaningful collaboration with organisations for training that can raise the capacity of its editorial staff and ultimately improve the fortunes of the agency.

Onanuga noted that NAN journalists had been trained to be compliant with the new trend of journalism such as data and investigative journalism.

He added that NAN, being a government-owned medium, had a mandate to hold government accountable.

The managing director explained that the organisation’s reportage cover all works of life, adding that the agency was subsidising the media in the country by charging affordable rates for its services.

While pledging to partner with ICIR, he noted that the public depended on the media for information and that NAN was committed to delivering on its mandate.

Mrs Nkechi Okoronkwo, the Acting Editor-in-Chief of NAN, underscored the need for capacity building, saying the management had continued to avail editorial staff of training opportunities organised both in-house and by external organisations.

She said that training was key to journalists’ development and that capacity building in the areas of science, health, economy and other sectors would be welcomed. (NAN)

Standard: NAFDAC trains staff on quality management system

Abuja, July 23, 2018 (NAN) The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has embarked on “Quality Management System’’ (QMS) training as part of rebuilding process to uphold standard.
The NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
Adeyeye said that the training focused on the use of international standards for running the agency with the purpose of placing premium on satisfaction of end-users or stakeholders of NAFDAC’s regulatory controls.
According to her, the goal is to safeguard the health of Nigerians.
She explained that NAFDAC desired to be International Standard Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 90001- 2015 certified, to imbibe quality operation culture and be at par with other regulatory authorities worldwide.
The director-general said that a major requirement to achieve the feat was that the agency should institute, implement and maintain an active QMS across all sections of its operations.
“In addition to the above, the agency also identified the need to use standardised and documented procedures to improve all activities and achieve its mandate of safeguarding the health of the nation.
“This would include operating a system that will be highly efficient in administration and active in internal auditing.’’
The NAFDAC boss said that a detailed work-plan had been developed to provide a road map to implement QMS in the agency, and ultimately attain ISO 9001:2015 certification.
According to her, a gap-assessment has been conducted on all NAFDAC directorates between October 2016 and May 2017, to determine lapses and proffer support where needed.
She added that the recommendations from the report on the exercise were being addressed. (NAN)
